Summer hiring slowdown? Nope. While the overall volume of attorney hiring in Florida might be down, I have not seen a slowdown as we enter the summer. What I do see is a slowdown in attorneys considering a lateral move. Many attorneys wait until the fall/winter to consider making a move because it's been programmed into their minds to wait for their year-end bonus before making a move. But when the majority zigs, you need to zag. In the summer, you will have less competition and many firms will match year-end bonuses. If there might be a better opportunity for you, are you really going to let the time of year dictate your happiness? You need to take control of your career, now. Landing an in-house counsel role isn’t easy. And I don’t have any unique approaches. But the following 4 tactics helped me: 1. Curate. Applying online is way too easy. Search in-house counsel jobs on LI and click 2 or 3 times. Application submitted. Unfortunately, this convenience makes it easy for everyone. The increased applicant pool means your package will need to be tailored to the applicable position. I built a word document with job-specific criteria that I would use before making my submissions. 2. Diligence. If you’re looking for a job, expect to put in the time. Even if you have the credentials –top law school, big law, in-house experience, etc. – landing a coveted, in-house role takes time. Be persistent in your pursuit. 3. Network. If you want to work for company X, then network with people in that company. Reach out and engage with content. This will not land you the job, but it may help put you in front of the hiring manager when a position opens. 4. Develop. In-house attorneys must be nimble and have a base understanding of myriad areas of law. If you are at a firm, then you will need to build this arsenal of knowledge. Contracts, data privacy, compliance, and litigation are all musts in the in-house world. #generalcounsel #attorney #inhousecounsel

Law firm associates beware! If you’re not getting the opportunities to develop the essential skill set you need to position yourself for partnership, look for the reason. It could merely be a function of a downturn in the economy and the dearth of sophisticated work. But if it seems that other select associates are getting the plum assignments, not you, that may be a sign that they’re being groomed for promotion and you’re not on track. If you suspect that’s the case, you need to be proactive. Talk to your mentor or practice group leader to see if there’s anything you can do to garner those opportunities in the future. If such opportunities aren’t forthcoming, you may need to consider your alternatives. You may need to move to a different, busier, practice group, decide that a counsel or permanent associate position also are acceptable career goals, or make a move to another firm or an alternative career—public service, government, academia, or outside law practice altogether. Wake up and look around! You don’t want to be taken by surprise by a negative partnership decision. "Under new Colorado law – effective January 1, 2024 – THIS COMPANY will no longer accept applications until a position is filled. All open positions will now have a clear and firm application deadline." I received this message this morning. When I work in a position that hires for open positions, I make it a point to fill all open positions. Why are some places content with leaving open positions unfilled? Soooo many of the lawyers I work with want to make a move to in-house counsel. And for most, their reasoning is that they’re tired of the law firm bullshit. 👀 They also report being pretty clueless (and understandably nervous) when trying to figure out how to land a job when they haven’t yet worked in-house—especially since most in-house counsel job descriptions require or prefer some level of in-house experience. Great news! Most companies don’t hire lawyers straight out of law school. Which means the majority of in-house counsel didn’t have in-house experience when they first made their move! So regardless of the type of legal experience you’ve gained during your career, you can implement several strategies to successfully land in-house.
