The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) was established to protect sensitive unclassified information within the Defense Industrial Base (DIB). Initially launched to address gaps in prior regulatory requirements, CMMC introduced a tiered standard and certification component to ensure compliance and security. On November 4, 2021, CMMC 2.0 was announced, streamlining the model from 5 to 3 compliance levels. This hybrid certification model is designed to reduce compliance barriers for small and mid-sized firms while enhancing the security of the defense supply chain against cyber threats.
