Professor of Biology at Central Michigan University; Interim Director of CMU Graduate Studies and Neuroscience
I am incredibly proud of Mohamed Elaswad, Ph.D., my first Ph.D. graduate from the lab! Congratulations on a great dissertation seminar and highly productive Ph.D. - we are already missing you in many ways at Central Michigan University, but we know you will do great things at Van Andel Institute! This is also a great time to share Mohamed Elaswad, Ph.D.'s most recent paper in American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB)'s Molecular Biology of the Cell, part of the special issue on Biomolecular Condensates, https://lnkd.in/eHpJDSbR. The work from Mohamed and coauthors reveals roles for the CCT chaperonin and actin in coordinately regulating the ER and phase transitions of RNA-binding proteins during oogenesis. These same regulators control translation of maternal mRNAs which is critical for oocyte quality.
Last month, I successfully defended my PhD dissertation in the Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology (BCMB) program at Central Michigan University. This journey has been an incredible period of growth, filled with challenges, scientific discoveries, and contributions to the field of protein phase transitions through several publications. Now, I'm thrilled to announce I have started a new chapter as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Van Andel Institute! #PhD #Postdoc #Hematopoiesis #CancerResearch #ProteinPhaseTransitions #ScientificJourney

💡 Why I Chose Medicine After Graduating in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 💡 After graduating with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, I realized that I wanted to apply my scientific knowledge in a more direct, impactful way. That’s what led me to pursue medicine. My background in biochemistry and molecular biology has provided me with a solid foundation in understanding the intricate working of the human body at the cellular level and molecular level , but I felt a calling to work directly with patients and help improve their health. Medicine gives me the opportunity to combine my love for science with my desire to make a difference in people’s lives. I am passionate about leveraging my scientific expertise in the field of personalized medicine, where I aim to tailor treatments based on individual biological factors to improve patient outcomes. It’s been a challenging yet rewarding journey so far, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing in this field. #Biochemistry #MolecularBiology #MedicalStudent #CareerChange #PassionForMedicine #AlRaziUniversity
