What Drives Giving: The Heart or Brain: Major Gifts, Planned Gifts & Donor Retention was presented at the 2023 Nonprofit Academy,St Mary's PA. and focuses on the power the heart plays in Major Gifts and Planned Giving through conducted research and the personal experiences of Gary L. Bukowski MA,CFRE VP for Advancement, in his fundraising effort to make a difference in Higher Education, with Intellectually Challenged Individuals and children with behavioral challenges. Six Major & Planned Giving case studies are reviewed. Research is used from the recent book, The Embodied Mind by Thomas R. Verny, M.D. and recent fundraising research. Did you know that less than 2% of philanthropic contributions (in the US) are directed towards #girlsandwomen organisations? At $ 8.8 billion, the pandemic saw a 9.2% increase in philanthropic giving to girls and women organisations, yet this figure is so low. #Reproductivehealth and #familyplanning organisations received the greatest amount of philanthropic support and some subsectors such as women’s and girls’ arts and culture, and women’s and #girlseducation received an unexpected boost in charitable giving from 2019 to 2020. This growth may be explained in part by the influence of a few large donations on relatively small areas of #philanthropy. In September of 2023, Florida Nonprofit Alliance and the Jessie du Pont Ball Foundation released Growing Generosity in Florida: Giving Groups Under 45. This report provides actionable insights for nonprofit organizations, donors, and policy makers about the dynamics of individual givers across Florida. In this study, we focused exclusively on younger people (adults aged 18-45) in order to generate insights about how to best attract and retain them as lifelong givers Analyzing generosity through the lens of distinct giving groups allows nonprofits to rethink and reorient their messaging to their audiences to attract new donors or reach former donors in new ways.
