It's National Volunteers Week so here's a little story for you.... One of my voluntary roles is the dream job of being Team Manager for my youngest son's rugby team (Pentyrch RFC Under 8s - soon to be Under 9s) One of our coaches got some great raffle prizes for us (a kicking session with Jonny Wilkinson) to raise money for our first tour next year.... I knew Raffall was an online raffle platform as I'd bought tickets on there previously, so I started setting up the raffle but wasn't enjoying the experience, it was a bit clunky... I google'd something like 'Raffall alternatives' and came across Raffaly - a new alternative with ✅ cheaper fees (great for charities where every penny counts!) ✅ guest checkout (making it much easier to buy raffle tickets - higher conversion and sales) Unfortunately I hit some stumbling blocks and page errors. I was on a hard deadline to get the raffle live as I was going on holiday the next day, so I put it live on Raffall but I emailed my bugs and feedback to Raffaly. The founder Liam Walder emailed me back the next day, he'd fixed all the bugs I'd found and thanked me for letting him know.... "If we saw someone else treating us the way most of us treat ourselves, we might think of them as cruel". Personally, I've lived with negative self talk for most of my adult life, and I know countless people who also experience it. Imagine if every time you tried something you said to yourself one of the following: "I can't do it, I'll look stupid" "People will be looking" "It won't be perfect" "I'll fail" Over time, you won't try something new. You will never develop confidence. Footballers across Europe won't be waiting for the Euros 2024 in Germany to feel confident, they will be building confidence with every training session and every game on the lead up to the championships. The same is true with your career. Confidence is in the daily activity you do. Students who can't reference experience in their applications aren't seeing the stuff they do on the daily e.g. - Time keeping - Turning up on time - Team work - Working together as a team on a class project - Commercial awareness / sales - Supporting the school with raising money on a community fundraiser project - The list goes on.... You build confidence in the most arbitrary ways, and the only way to sustain authentic confidence is to track it. And to know the distinct differences between self-esteem and self-belief.
