Let’s talk about the power of 10. In 2012, when my son Emery was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a terminal neuromuscular wasting disease, I felt very very alone. Perhaps loneliness isn’t the right term. I felt powerless. As a mother, a wife, a person. About 10 weeks after Emery’s diagnosis, the insurance industry in Toronto, a community that I joined in 1999, threw a fundraiser in support of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital where Emery was being treated. I was afraid to attend. I thought only a handful of people would come. Life is busy. We all have our stuff. 450 people came. In 2018, my friend Eileen Greene, who sits on the Board with me for Holland Bloorview’s Foundation, suggested we throw a dinner party to raise some awareness and much needed funds for Holland Bloorview as part of a new campaign – #capesforkids . We created the #LeagueOfExtraordinaryInsuranceWomen. Eileen hosted. My husband cooked. We laughed (and cried) in our capes. We raised about $10,000 that first year. Then we kept going. We knew that our strength was in numbers, and if we could grow from 10 members to 20, we could raise that much more. By 2023, we had raised $222,000 and our team of 10 had grown to 40. This year, we focused on the power of 10, 10x10. Could we possibly raise $100,000? Could we possibly persuade 10 more people to join the League? We are 72 Leaguers strong as of today. On February 29, Eileen and I hosted our Capes for Kids Party, at my firm’s new office. Over 100 incredible people joined us and in 4 hours, we raised $10,000. In the 10 days since, we have raised a further $20,000 and are just shy of $80,000 in total. And so now, as Emery’s mama, as a friend and colleague (who knows that if we don’t ask, we don’t get), I am asking you to join me. Instead of heading out for a cup of coffee and a muffin this week, would you consider joining in the cause to change the world for kids with disabilities and medical complexities? Would you consider taking less than 10 minutes to donate the cost of your morning latte and treat, $10, once, to Capes for Kids? Would you join me in making a world of possibilities for Emery, your kid, all kids? We have $20,000 to raise by the end of March to hit our very ambitious goal. With your help, we can do it, and then next time I get to see you, coffee is on me. Working in litigation, specifically expert witness work, can be incredibly tough - from catastrophic injury to clinical negligence, there is a multitude of degrees of injury, disability, and life-changing effects resulting that I read about on a day-to-day basis. However, we only ever witness the cases that end up in the litigation process, and I'm often left thinking about the swaths of people that have no such case, but have the same life-changing injuries as those that are able to be compensated. Frenkel Topping Charitable Foundation helps such people who haven't been able to receive financial support for their circumstances, and here's a short video to show just some of what the Foundation has been able to achieve!

I am delighted to share the news that just as the #Gallagher PSE Red Heart Chilli Steppers completed their February #britishheartfoundation 10,000 steps a day challenge, I received the amazing news that Chineham Tigers FC was the successful recipient of a Gallagher Community Fund award.    This money has enabled the purchase of a portable defibrillator for the u12 & u16s teams, to ensure the safety of all the players, officials & parents, no matter the location of a match!    This award is actually a little more personal to me….one day this defib will give my partner the best possible chance of survival, when he suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, as a result of an incurable heart condition.   For context if you use a defib within the first minutes of a cardiac arrest occurring, the survival rate for victims can be as high as 90%. However, if defibrillation is delayed for longer than ten minutes, the chance of survival for an adult is unfortunately lower than 5%. I'm training hard each week as I prepare for my sixth-year riding with the Breakthrough T1D Logistics Leaders for T1D Cure Ride Team (LL4T1D Cure). And it's exciting to share this journey with Adrian Gonzalez and our teammates. I spent this past Saturday riding a bike for 100 miles... my fifth of 24 century rides in 2024... and I'm at 20% of my riding goal this year to prepare for the Coeur d'Alene Ride on Sept 28th. Why do I ride? For co-workers, students, friends, and family that are dealing with T1D and to give them hope for a cure. Every dollar raised helps fund research to find a cure to T1D. T1D is a serious autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people - its causes are not fully known, and currently, there is no cure. To manage their T1D, people regularly monitor their blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance those doses with eating and daily activities to prevent uncomfortable, and even dangerous, side effects.
