A groundbreaking study led by Edwin van Leeuwen of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics some years ago revealed how one simple action, the “Grass-in-the-ear” technique, sparked a new trend in chimp etiquette. Through meticulous analysis of over 700 hours of video footage from #Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Zambia, researchers uncovered the origins of this unique behavior. IAnd yes, it all started with Julie, a female chimp, who began inserting grass into her ears seemingly without reason. Astonishingly, her peers soon followed suit, demonstrating the power of social learning among chimpanzees. What’s particularly fascinating is that this behavior persisted even after Julie’s passing, highlighting the cultural potential of chimpanzees. As van Leeuwen explains, this phenomenon reflects their proclivity to actively learn from group members, even adopting arbitrary behaviors that may hold some intrinsic reward. Published in Springer’s journal Animal Cognition, this study sheds light on the intricate social dynamics and cultural transmission within chimpanzee communities.
