State, federal, and auto industry leaders have set ambitious targets to transition to electric vehicles over the coming decade. Governor Newsom and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have set California on a pathway to phase out the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035. To support this transition, we will need millions of EV chargers. But where can we locate this new mobility infrastructure to the needs of priority communities, integrate with other transportation modes, and support connectivity and economic development? Local governments will play a crucial role, and they will need decision-making tools for stakeholder-informed processes. UC Berkeley’s Energy & Resources Group, School of Information, and School of Law are developing a platform to meet this need. “At the current pace, public fast-charging sites will outnumber gas stations in the US in about eight years — but charger momentum is only expected to accelerate.” The majority of non-EV owning consumers point to a lack of charging infrastructure as a primary reason against going electric, but the times are changing! According to Bloomberg, there will be more charging sites than gas stations in only 8 years. Wild to think of how exponentially quick charging infrastructure is going to grow, especially in more rural areas. https://lnkd.in/da_EcRQu Side anecdote - we took our EV from Charleston to the Outer Banks last week for our annual family beach trip and charging was a breeze. Marcia Newbert and I were even saying that we would have never considered stopping at one of the host restaurants that we charged at, but did because they offered fast charging. And we’re glad we did, too, as they made some fantastic hush puppies. EV charging shouldn’t be seen as an additional amenity, but rather as a core business strategy to increase brand awareness and foot traffic with new customers!
