They don't need you to come in and propose research topics based on your interests. Instead, talk about your skills. That's what employers care about. 𝟮) 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 When you say you're a problem solver, that does nothing to differentiate you among all of the other competition. Everyone at work is a problem solver, even if they don't have a PhD. Instead talk about specific technical skills that you can develop methods for, use, and troubleshoot independently. Examples - NGS, affinity chromatography, cell line development, media development/optimization 𝟯) 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 When you're asked a question, pay attention to what is being asked. If it's a yes/no question, say "yes", "no", or "I don't know". Or if the question is asking for a list of things, provide a list of things. Don't tell a story unless they ask for one. If they do ask for a story, (ie "tell me about a time when...") practice bottom line up-front communication. Meet the Momentum Team: MaryRose Steed, Research Associate. Tell us about your professional background. I’ve been working at Momentum for about a year and a half, where I luckily started working right out of college. I went to the University of New Haven and studied Biology with a Pre-Med concentration. I was kept busy there as a tutor, in athletics, various clubs, and worked different jobs, but my last experience was working with my school’s Covid Task Force as a tester. What started out as an internship then later turned into employment providing me with great experience, especially for sample handling and safety procedures. What initially sparked your interest in this field? Growing up, I always preferred science courses over anything else. I took an anatomy course in high school and just simply loved it. When I went to college, I originally was thinking about medical school or nursing school after graduating. However, when I took Cell Biology that changed for me. I became fascinated about the human body on such a smaller scale than how it previously intrigued me. After that, I was hoping to get a job in a lab involving drug discovery/development and I succeeded! Describe a day in your life at Momentum. I primarily spend my time in the RapidFire-MS lab preparing samples to be run or working on method development. I also will prepare and run samples for ICP-MS analysis. I recently began training for sample preparation for our Covalent Binding Assays and RNA-based ASMS projects. Other than that, I work with the other Research Associates on inventory, shipping/receiving, and other typical laboratory housekeeping tasks. What makes you most excited about Momentum? Client visits! Hearing about how our services advance their drug development is very rewarding. It’s great being able to put faces to names and hearing first-hand about the projects our clients are pursuing. What advice would you give aspiring scientists?
