In recent years, there have been a number of new drugs approved for #ALS, and Muscular Dystrophy Association funding has been involved either directly or indirectly in most of those. One example is QALSODY® (tofersen), which is a drug for a genetic form of ALS, and MDA funded the first clinical trial for the predecessor to that drug. One of the key areas of #ALSresearch that we think is very important is the ability to diagnose people earlier. Most people have symptoms of ALS for a year to six months before they're actually diagnosed, so if we could back up that time and start drugs and clinical trials earlier, we feel like that would have a great impact across different types of therapies in ALS. #ALSawarenessMonth #EndALSwithMDA

Many people don't realize that the department of veterans affairs classified the military veteran community as underserved. There’s a category of #military brats that are especially deserving of the nation’s recognition, gratitude, and serious study: the roughly 2 million Post-9/11 military children who experienced at least one if not multiple parental deployments—most often to theaters of #war—in the 20yr period after 2001. Already by 2011 (the formal end of the Iraq War), more than 4,300 of these children had had a parent killed in the Iraq & Afghanistan wars. As of 2015, that number had reached some 5,000. It’s difficult to know exactly how many American military kids are survivors or orphans of troops who were killed in the line of duty during the #GWOT, or who they are, let alone the total numbers of children survivors of all those who’ve served in the Post-9/11 era: There does not appear to be any type of database or central repository of information from which to find them. Surveying the past 35 years with the Lucas Group, however, the nonprofit Fallen Patriots has estimated that approximately 25,000 children have lost an active duty parent during that time (whether from accident, illness, hostilities, or suicide). The majority of these fatalities were their fathers. We owe a debt to these military children that goes far beyond media pronouncements and themed events once a year in April.

April presents us with an exceptional opportunity to honor the resilient hearts of military children. Although military children proudly embrace the term "military brat," many outside this lifestyle remain unaware of the experiences these children endure, both positive and negative. Annually, the Department of Defense collaborates with national, state, and local entities, including schools, military-support organizations, businesses, and private individuals, to honor military children and acknowledge their sacrifices. This recognition is particularly prominent every April during the Month of the Military Child. Established in 1986 by former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, the Month of the Military Child provides an opportunity for Americans to celebrate these children for their contributions on the home front and within their communities. According to the Department of Defense, over 1.6 million military children encounter distinct challenges and experiences due to their parents' service. These challenges may include relocating away from friends, enduring prolonged separations from parents, or witnessing their parents return home with physical or mental wounds. Among the 1.6 million military children, approximately 11,200 are offspring of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen. These children undergo similar struggles as those of active-duty service members' children but often lack access to equivalent programs, services, and community support.
