Last week, I had the opportunity to meet Pak Wayan Patut, a resident of Serangan Village, Sanur, Bali. Though he appears humble, he is a remarkably wise and impactful individual. Behind his seemingly ordinary life, Pak Patut has made extraordinary contributions to the environment. In his small workshop in Serangan Village, Pak Patut has earned numerous awards for his dedication to environmental sustainability. One of his notable achievements is transforming plastic waste into various handicrafts with market value such as keychains, chairs, bucket hats, coasters, decorations, flowerpots, ropes, name tags, and even statues. Yes, it's all made from plastic – amazing! As we know, the issue of waste, particularly plastic waste, is endless. Plastic waste poses significant dangers to the environment, including pollution of oceans and waterways, harm to marine life, and the release of toxic chemicals as plastics break down. Pak Patut says, "Sustainability is not only about preserving the environment for the future, but also about making a positive impact on our community today." Yes, I learned a lot from him about environmental management and the immense value of our environment, so I feel very fortunate to have met him. Ahh, Wings the Tiger… 🐯🐅 The second “child” in my 3-piece collection with 4ocean PBC. This journey began last year with Aqua the Polar Bear, made entirely from Danone plastic waste—Bali’s biggest plastic polluter. Now, I’ve returned to finish Wings the Tiger, created from plastic collected from Bali’s second-largest polluter: Wings Group Indonesia (Sayap Mas Utama). These pieces are more than just art. They’re a bold, visual call-out to the big brands responsible for this pollution, urging them to own up to their environmental impact. I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the world-renowned artist Herz, who helped bring the concept of these animals to life. Together, we envisioned these majestic creatures to symbolize the beauty we’re fighting to protect. But it wasn’t just about the big ideas. This process took a lot of patience and precision. I worked side by side with the 4ocean PBC team, collecting plastic from Bali’s beaches, and then brought in the amazing Gekwin to meticulously cut each tiny piece of the wrappers. We spent countless late nights arranging fragments, searching for wrappers that hadn’t been too damaged by salt and sun. They are doing an amazing job that needs to be commended. People don’t realize the effect of their actions until they are humbled by the problem they caused few years back. Let’s give our used PET bottles new life! 🌍♻️ On Earth Day, Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team organized a 'Bring PET Bottles and Get Rewarded' activity at our headquarters in Bangkok, promoting waste separation and PET bottle recycling. With the active contribution of employees and housekeeping personnel, we collected a whopping 6,600 PET bottles in just a few hours! These bottles were sent to our recycling plant in Nakhon Pathom province. Just imagine the impact if everyone joined in recycling efforts and more initiatives like this emerged – those recycled bottles could multiply and make an even greater impact! #SmallReads: Coldplay's Approach to Reducing Plastic Waste -------------------------- #Coldplay, the iconic #British band, is making headlines with their commitment to #sustainability through their upcoming album, "Moon Music." This project introduces the #EcoRecord and #EcoCDs, which are crafted from recycled materials. Each EcoRecord is made from nine recycled #PET bottles, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and preventing the production of virgin #plastic. The EcoCDs contain 90% post-consumer waste #polycarbonate, leading to a remarkable 78% reduction in #CO2 #emissions. In collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup, Coldplay has also launched the Notebook Edition EcoRecord LP, which incorporates river plastics collected from #Guatemala. This partnership highlights their dedication to tackling plastic #pollution. Beyond album production, Coldplay is implementing responsible waste management at their #concerts. During their Music of the Spheres World Tour in #Jakarta, they partnered with #Waste4Change, diverting over 11,700 kg of waste from #landfills. This initiative demonstrates that organic waste can be repurposed and inorganic waste recycled effectively.

The Philippine #paper mill industry initially began its operations by relying on bamboo and tree plantations for their raw materials. However, as these resources became depleted, the industry shifted towards recycling to meet the growing demand for paper products. Which is good for the environment, in so many ways. Today, about 60% of paper products sold locally are made from recycled materials, while the rest are produced from virgin pulp significantly imported. In the process of recycling paper, plastic wastes are generated, often as residues from the paper recycling process. Previously, these plastic wastes were either dumped into landfills or left in paper mill backyards, leading to significant environmental issues such as odor, leachate, and concerns from surrounding communities and regulators. #ecoloop provides a crucial role in helping paper mills manage and recycle the plastic waste generated during the recycling process fostering a #circulareconomy. Back to 3 months ago, I went on a "waste trip" in the Jakarta coastal area with Nigel McNally from NEO WTR & Alvaro Aguilar I from Prevented Ocean Plastic Bali. Plastic waste covers coastal area until the soil and sand are not visible. Several waste trucks were seen coming 'on purpose' dumping the waste near the oceans. Research states that, by 2050, plastic will likely outweigh all fish in the sea (unesco, 2022). If this continues to happen, will the ocean be safe? Will we survive?
