"Discreteness should be looked upon from the perspective of fine tuning of Anthropic principle which is necessary for the sustainment and evolution of life"--- The discreteness in Quantum mechanics has much to do with fine tuning if looked upon from a greater picture. An electron is allowed to jump to a higher orbit when it absorbs a photon and to settle down to a lower orbit on emitting a photon and not anywhere in between. These discrete orbits are a part of a plot of fine tuning as, if these orbits would not have been there, the electron would have fell into the nucleus and there would not exist a specific structure of the atom as we see, which is responsible for the evolution and existence of life. If atom becomes unstable , complex life sustaining molecules would not form and life would not come into existence in the first place. Another example is of a problem that physicsts faced in the late 19th and early 20th century of Ultraviolet catastrophe wherein it was found that @ thermodynamic equilibrium, materials would radiate off all the energy instantaneously in all frequencies which is not allowed in our universe. So Planck had suggested discrete quanta or packets of energy in which energy would be allowed to released. These quanta are photons. Thus discreteness looked upon from the perspective of fine tuning of Anthropic principle,is done only for the evolution and existence of life. Discreteness doesn't mean sub atomic particles or even space time is fundamental as we can infer the former as a result of vibrating Strings being fundamental as looked upon from the perspective of String theory and the later looked upon from the perspective of quantum entanglement of space which is again a consequence of Quantum mechanics. Our world has some measurable limits which are constricted till the Plancks length or Plancks energy beyond which the energy scales are irrelevant to us. But this doesn't mean that the Plancks length is discrete (it's discrete only from our perspective) but as we can infer from calculations near black holes space time breaks down beyond Plancks length wherein both General relativity and Quantum mechanics fail to cater to the mathematics and thus a new quantum theory of gravity is required. So energies beyond Plancks scale are not relevant to us but do exist and might be relevant from the perspective of higher dimensions. So we can't say that Plancks scale is discrete. It's discrete only to our consciousness which is finite and constricted within the 4 dimensions. So it's discreteness is necessary for our evolution, our survival. This is again a case of fine tuning. If space-time is broken down indefinitely beyond Plancks scale then @ certain point even time would cease to exist. So the discreteness in our world must be looked upon as an example of fine tuning of Anthropic principle.

Material strength is a critical property for the crusts of neutron stars, which are made of ions arranged in a crystal lattice. Neutron star crust is the strongest material in the universe, and a teaspoon of this superlative matter would weigh 5 tons if brought to Earth’s surface.
