Exposure to toxic substances has been linked to a range of negative effects on #humanhealth, and #PFAS – often dubbed #ForeverChemicals – also have significant impacts on #biodiversity since they do not break down in nature. Hazardous #chemicals also present material risks for investors through exposure to litigation and new regulation, with PFAS described as “the next asbestos”. As part of the focus area related to #Water, the Council on Ethics is a member of the Investor Initiative on Hazardous Chemicals, working with peers to engage with manufacturers on transparency and safer alternatives. Highlights from last week’s workshop with members of the initiative:  🔹 Dialogues with 20 chemicals manufacturers are progressing, with four new companies added this season.  🔹 A number of the dialogues explore how companies can use AI in moving to safer alternatives.  🔹 With 12 more investors joining since the start of the year, there are now 66 members in the initiative. Making "clean" chips for the "Green" Transition is a very dirty, toxic business   The US Environmental Protection Agency proposed in February 2024 that nine PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," be categorized as hazardous to human health. https://lnkd.in/e3wuzNyj   Along with 400 other chemicals, PFAS are widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, in factory infrastructures such as refrigerants and structural materials, and equipment, such as chemical containers, tubes and lubricants. In actual production, PFASs are used during the lithography phase-incising the silicon basis of the chip with the relevant geometrical shapes, and for etching, an operation that removes unnecessary parts with chemical agents. https://lnkd.in/eD7RPNPu   In Taiwan, the world’s top chip producer, the contamination of rivers with PFAS and other dangerous chemicals has been documented since 2009. The contamination occurred via wastewaters and concerned PFOS and PFOA, two of the most hazardous kinds of ‘forever chemicals’. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued its Final Rule for Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturing Plants & Polymers & Resins.   The aim of this rule is to reduce cancer and serious health effects from toxic air pollutants and smog-forming compounds. The EPA estimates this will impact over 200 US chemical plants and provide health protections to 9.3 million people who live within 10km of these facilities.   This is relevant to financial markets which are seeing externalities being converted into internal costs for corporates.
