Lens Urban Project | January 27, 2024 [Opinion] We need more public spaces, not commercial stores. I live in Gyeongju, Korea. The city was the capital of the Silla Kingdom for a long time, and historic sites coupled with beautiful nature throughout the city attract many domestic and overseas travelers every year. Despite being considered the country's most famous historical city, when it comes to urban planning and design, Gyeongju has been running behind compared to historical cities in other countries. For many young Korean people, what comes to mind first when they think about Gyeongju may be the "Hwangridan-gil" area, where many old houses were renovated and turned into cafes, restaurants, and other commercial stores. (The word gil means street) Although Hwangridan-gil is flooded with people day and night, it has not gone through a development process based on a sustainable, well-designed, long-term master plan that connects the area to other urban elements of the city. Furthermore, the area is now too commercialized and is facing gentrification issues. For the urban areas in the city to be more sustainable, the city government needs to focus on creating high-quality public spaces, where people can relax and interact with urban elements, in line with well-designed, long-term master plans rather than developing areas packed with cafes, restaurants, and other commercial stores.

The Guangzhou Metro logo is called "the best-looking subway logo in China" by netizens. It is easy to understand and remember with its simple structure and deep red color. The design meaning behind it is also very interesting! Guangzhou is also known as "Yangcheng". Legend has it that in ancient times, there were five immortals riding five-colored sheep, holding ears of grain, descending on Guangzhou, and giving the ears of grain to the people, wishing that there would be "no famine" here. The Five Goats Statue located in Yuexiu Park has become a symbol of Guangzhou and a frequent attraction for local residents and tourists. The design of the Guangzhou Metro logo is inspired by "ram horns", which reflects the regional cultural characteristics of Guangzhou and symbolizes the prosperity and development of the city. The infinitely extending two railroad tracks represent a well-connected transportation network, implying Guangzhou's important position as a transportation hub, and also symbolizing the wide coverage and convenience of the subway network. Most of the urban infrastructure or landmark creations are closely related to the local culture, showing the local creativity and unique style in the most intuitive way, and are also an important means to enhance the city's popularity. Have you ever seen 20,000 people living in a single building?🏢... Unbelievable Global Stories #1... The Regent International apartment building in Hangzhou, China, is famous for having a number of inhabitants comparable to a small town, around 20,000 people. Located in Qianjiang Century City, the S-shaped Regent International was originally designed as a luxury hotel, but was subsequently converted into a colossal apartment building, with the rooms turned into thousands of high-end residential apartments. The impressive building is 206 m tall and has 36 to 39 floors, features a variety of amenities and businesses, like a giant food court for its tens of thousands of inhabitants, as well as swimming pools, barber shops, nail salons, medium-sized supermarkets, and internet cafes. You can find anything you need in the building, so technically you don’t even need to go outside. . . #skyscraper #china #residentialrealestate —————————————————— Unbelievable Global Stories is a series which uncover mind-blowing stories that have been hidden in the shadows for far too long. 📚 If you like, follow CA Vivek Gupta to continue learning about some mind blowing stories from around the world. LESSONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: In Hong Kong I learned the balance between memory and prophecy I lived in Hong Kong for two years, more than a decade ago and I loved it! As I walked through the bustling streets of Hong Kong, I was struck by a city that seamlessly blends the ancient with the ultra-modern. This city, a place of skyscrapers soaring towards the future, still holds tight to its rich, spiritual roots. Embracing the Old and the New Hong Kong is a city of contrasts. Here, next to towering glass structures, you’ll find centuries-old temples. These historical sites are pockets of tranquility amid the fast-paced urban environment. The city’s duality taught me the importance of blending tradition with innovation in my designs. Quiet Moments in Lively Places Despite its reputation as a finance powerhouse, Hong Kong’s spiritual sites offer serene escapes where history and modernity meet. The calm of incense-filled temples amidst the city noise showed me how spaces can connect us to the past while moving us forward. Nature and City Life The natural beauty of Hong Kong—from the quiet harbor views to the lush trails of Victoria Peak—reminds us that the best designs consider their environment. Hong Kong’s geography has shaped its architecture, proving that development can complement nature, not just consume it. Balancing Design with Tradition Living in Hong Kong, where Feng Shui and Taoism influence everything from skyscraper placements to business dealings, has influenced how I approach my projects. It’s about more than aesthetics; it’s about making spaces that feel right and flow well. Hong Kong’s blend of old and new is a lesson in balance. As designers, how can we integrate this harmony into our work? How can we design for the future without losing the essence of what came before? #DesignThinking #HongKongLessons #CulturalContrasts -- Enjoy this? ♻️ Share the post with others and follow me for more. 🔔 📸 by Andres Garcia

🌿 Nature is medicine and science backs it up! Imagine if every unused balcony, windowsill and rooftop was covered in plants. 💚 But how does being surrounded by green helps? 🌱 Spending time in nature, including urban areas, has been shown to improve moods, mindsets, and overall mental health 🌱 Nature exposure contributes to attention restoration theory (a theory suggesting that mental fatigue and concentration can be improved by time spent in, or looking at nature), relieving mental fatigue and enhancing the ability to focus 🌱 The biophilia hypothesis suggests an innate human desire to connect with nature and other life forms. We feel better in nature because we are designed to feel a connection with nature 🌱 Exposure to natural sounds, particularly those from birds and water, is associated with reduced stress, decreased pain, and improved mood I could keep going with benefits but instead, I will leave you with a call to action: 🪴As a company, offer greener spaces to employees or add more plants to the office 🪴As an individual, propagate and exchange plants to create a green oasis at home, and take time during your lunch break TODAY to take short walk to the nearest park #biophilia #naturetherapy #greenspaces #sustainability
🌿 Embracing Nature in the Heart of Chengdu, China! 🌆 Chengdu is making waves in its pursuit to become a green haven with the stunning Qiyi City Forest Garden, an eight-tower housing development that's redefining urban living! 🏡🌳 Billed as an "eco paradise," this innovative project boasts 826 units, each adorned with its own plant-filled balcony resembling an overgrown backyard in the sky. The Qiyi City Forest Garden not only looks cool but also serves as a powerhouse of benefits for both residents and the environment. 🌍 🌱 Environmental Impact: Beyond aesthetics, these green spaces play a crucial role in absorbing CO2, contributing to cleaner air for everyone in Chengdu. 🔇 Noise Buffer: Amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life, the lush greenery acts as a natural noise buffer, providing a peaceful oasis for residents to unwind. 😌 Psychological Benefits: The symbiotic relationship between nature and mental well-being is well-established. The Qiyi City Forest Garden offers a refreshing escape, promoting a healthier and happier community. However, as we celebrate this commendable initiative, it's crucial to ensure the longevity of this green paradise. I sincerely hope that tenants have been equipped with the knowledge and resources to properly maintain and care for their plants. 🌿💚 #ChengduGreenCity #SustainableLiving #UrbanDevelopment #QiyiCityForestGarden 🧭 Chengdu, China

🌆 The Shanghai Skyline: Then vs. Now 🌆 When you think of iconic skylines, Shanghai undoubtedly comes to mind. But just a few decades ago, the city’s skyline looked drastically different. 1990: 🔙 Shanghai in 1990 was a city on the verge of transformation. The skyline was dominated by historical buildings 🏛️ and a few high-rise structures 🏢. The Pudong area, now known for its futuristic skyline, was largely undeveloped and dotted with warehouses and fields 🌾. In April of 1990, the beginning of the Pudong New Area project was approved 📜. This plan named Pudong as a new special economic zone that was open to foreign investment 🌍. Today: ➡️ Fast forward to 2024, and Shanghai boasts one of the most impressive skylines in the world 🏙️. The Lujiazui area in Pudong is home to towering skyscrapers like the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center (bottle opener) 🏢, the Jin Mao Tower 🏙️, and the Shanghai Tower, which is the third tallest building in the world at 632 meters 🌍. 🔍 What changes in Shanghai’s skyline did you find most impressive?
