Next-generation Climate Targets: A 5-Point Plan for NDCs By early 2025, countries are due to unveil new national climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs). These commitments form the foundation of international #climateaction, establishing #emissionsreduction targets and other measures countries promise to implement. Yet #NDCs to date fall well short of what’s needed to avert increasingly dangerous climate impacts and hold global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F). A recent UN report found that current commitments put the world on track for a catastrophic 2.5-2.9 degrees C (4.5 - 5.2 degrees F) of warming by 2100. Historically, many NDCs have not fully realized their potential to outline the ambition and actions required for truly transformative climate action. This time around, NDCs must evolve to set the sights of government on the pace and scale of change needed and advance implementation to deliver it. Here, is a proposed five-point plan for the next generation of NDCs: 1) Set 2035 and strengthen 2030 emissions-reduction targets aligned with 1.5-degrees C and net-zero emissions goals. 2) Accelerate comprehensive system-wide changes by setting ambitious, time-bound targets for each sector. 3) Build resilience to increasingly dangerous and irreversible impacts. 4) Spur investment and strengthen governance to turn targets into practice. 5) Put people at the center, ensuring climate action creates jobs, improves health, and more. So What's Next? 🤔 By 2035, the world must shift to a fundamentally different trajectory to address the climate crisis effectively. The NDCs that countries submit next year will indicate which nations are genuinely committed to significantly reducing emissions and rapidly enhancing adaptation efforts to meet this challenge. By adopting these in the development of next-generation NDCs, countries can not only #mitigate the severe impacts of climate change but also open doors to #sustainabledevelopment, job creation, and improved public health.

Climate Finance Taxonomy Criteria for economic activities that are aligned with a net zero trajectory by 2050 and broader environmental goals other than climate. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said during her Union Budget 2024-25 that the government will develop a taxonomy for #climatefinance to help improve the availability of funds for adapting to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Further, this will support the achievement of the country’s #climatecommitments and #greentransition. Why taxonomy is significant? With global temperatures soaring, and the adverse effects of climate change exacerbating, countries need to transition to a net-zero economy — the balance between the amount of GHG that is produced, and the amount that is removed from the atmosphere. Taxonomies can play a pivotal role in doing this as they can help ascertain if economic activities are aligned with credible, science-based transition pathways. They can also give impetus to the deployment of #climatecapital, and reduce the risks of #greenwashing. India in its latest submission to the UN climate body has called for developed countries to provide “at least" $1 trillion per year in climate finance to developing countries from 2025 to take required actions to face the challenges of global warming. Details under the new goals for 2025-35 are expected to be decided at the 29th session of the UN Climate Conference (#COP29) in November in Baku, Azerbaijan. #SforE #ClimateFinance #Taxonomy #EconomicDevelopmet #NetZero #SustainableEnvironment #COP29

💧World Water Day 💧 Advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources, the World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22 and was instituted in the year 1993 to build #publicawareness and involvement in protecting #waterresources around the world. The theme of World Water Day 2024 is #WaterforPeace. Water can create peace or spark conflict. When water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal, or no access, tensions can rise between communities and countries. As #climatechange impacts increase, and populations grow, there is an urgent need, within and between countries, to unite around protecting and conserving our most precious resource. When we cooperate on water, we create a positive #rippleeffect – fostering #harmony, generating #prosperity and #buildingresilience to shared challenges. This World Water Day, we all need to #unite around water and use water for peace, laying the foundations of a more stable and #prosperoustomorrow. Water is a precious commodity. Conserving water should be a way of life and not something we think about once in 365 days. #SforE #Water #Environment #ClimateChange #HarmonywithWater #HealthyFuture #Responsibility #GreenEarth #SaveWater #Prosperity #Conserve #GreenEnergy #Nurture

🍃 Global Recycling Day 🍃 When this day came into existence and when is this day..?? Yes, its today; '18th March 2024'🍀 ... #GlobalRecyclingDay was established on 18th March 2018 to raise understanding of the people about how our environment is harmed due to plastic. The day also raises awareness of recycling as an idea and an important concept. A total of 23 Global Recycling Day activities occurred throughout the world when the day was observed for the first time. Picking up garbage, media interviews, and family-friendly activities was part of the campaign. Every year different themes are set for this #BigDay. One of its main goals was to show off the achievements, accomplishments, and contributions of people who have contributed to making a change in society. #CarbonPollution has been reduced by almost 700 million metric tonnes annually because of #recycling. This Year's theme is #RecyclingHeroes 😎 This means we celebrate people and actions that help our planet by recycling. There are numerous benefits of recycling for a #SustainableFuture. Some of them are: 〰 Conservation of Natural Resources 〰 Energy Conservation 〰 Reduction in Landfill Waste 〰 Reduced Pollution 〰 Climate Change Mitigation 〰 Conservation of Biodiversity 〰 Reduced Water Usage 〰 Economic benefits and Promotion of Circular Economy 〰 Environment Awareness and Education Nowadays every town has implemented a six-bin garbage disposal system, which comprises dumpsters for dry trash, bio-waste, plastic garbage, e-waste, home hygienic waste, and household toxic waste at the site or the domestic site level. The goal is to speed up the process of #recycling, #composting, and #discardinggarbage while also making the process simpler. So do your bit and create a healthy happy environment 😊 #SforE #Recycling #Conservation #CleanEnvironment #PlasticRecycling #Awareness #GreenEnergy #SustainableLife #HealthyLiving #HappyLearning

India and CBAM - How we are dealing with this? India is a prime competitor in global marketplace and playing a crucial role in economic growth and #EnvironmentResponsibility. Though, India is also the world’s third-largest emitter of CO2, after China and the US. India has expressed concerns about CBAM at various international forums, including the World Trade Organization (WTO). The #SteelIndustry is considered a hard-to-abate sector and is responsible for almost 8% of global emissions. In order to fully grasp the new CBAM tax implications, we need to examine India’s exports to the EU in a single year (2022). India’s #CarbonTax rate is currently among the lowest in the world at just USD$1.6 per tonne of CO2 emissions. But the EU’s CBAM is poised to hamstring India’s exports of energy-intensive items. Ultimately, the impact of CBAM on India will depend on the #CarbonIntensity of the exported products and their substitutes in the EU market. Indian Government is taking actionable measures to minimize the impact. Good news is that India is laying the foundation for the creation of a #carbonmarket . In this regard, the #MinistryofPower published a draft of the Carbon Credits Trading Scheme (CCTS) on March 27, 2023. The draft comprehensively outlines the institutional framework and operational mechanisms that will govern the forthcoming carbon credit market in India. More recently, it has been reported that India has officially reached out to the EU, requesting formal recognition of its domestic carbon credit trading program once it is finalized. Other measures taken by Indian Government are: - Negotiating with the EU. - Developing a Carbon Pricing Mechanism. - Promoting Renewable Energy. - Investing in Carbon Capture Technologies. #SforE #CarbonMarket #RenewableEnergy #EmissionsReduction #EconomicGrowth #CCT #CleanEnergy #India #Industries
