Value-based care makes net new demands of physicians that we cannot ignore. I didn't realize that several for-profit VBC clinics like Oak Street Health ChenMed Aledade, Inc. and One Medical are partnering with medical schools and residency programs to provide exposure to VBC during medical training. Already, clinical training experiences vary wildly by region, institution, and even across sites in the same speciality at a given health system. There is so much opportunity for innovative care delivery businesses to take active roles in training the next generation of clinicians who will be expected to survive and thrive under these new care delivery paradigms. It would be interesting to track the outcomes of students and residents who participate, for example: 1) Are they more likely to pursue Family Medicine, a field with a notable physician shortage? 2) Are they more likely to start their own practices after training, or within the first 5-10 years thereafter? Business acumen benefits professionals in every industry, but there is another way of viewing the business of #healthcare that is also worth considering. Physicians are already asked to learn more than what can be expected of any individual, especially today when the volume of medical knowledge is expanding exponentially. Happy to see my colleague, Jonathan Wolfson get published in the The Wall Street Journal! Jonathan's article covers a new wave of state laws that cut redundant re-education pathways for top-tier foreign-licensed doctors, and provides them an opportunity to serve communities with severe doctor shortages. America is not producing enough doctors to keep up with growing patient populations and put downward pressure on healthcare prices across the board. Traditionally the conversation for reducing physician shortages have been confined to a stalemate in Congress where many folks want Medicare to further subsidize hospitals' creation of residency programs. Despite the lag on residency creation, it has been inspiring to see many states not wait on Washington DC, and think of ways to modernize licensing pathways (so we don't needlessly pit American medical grads against skilled foreign-licensed doctors) and incentivize the best doctors in the world to come to the states. I cannot wait to see how the great state of Texas interacts with this concept. It'd be amazing to see Texas introduce a similar policy so that traditionally underserved Texans can, for the first time in a long time, say they not only have access to a doctor, but they believe they access to a "choice" of doctors. It was a privilege to learn from and work with Jonathan in Tennessee, the first state to pass this type of legislation. It's replication in so many other states is a good sign that this is a bi-partisan commonsense reform that could put a dent in most states' doctor shortage projections. Great job, Jonathan, for yours and The Cicero Institute's work to curb the detriments of physician shortages. I hope to see Texas catch up and tackle this growing problem.
