Lateral flexion is essential for fast bowlers The old traditional terminology of ‘mixed actions’ and ‘lateral flexion’ amongst others need updating To deliver a cricket ball you have to laterally flex the spine. It’s impossible to not. The key with all high velocity movement is the BANDWIDTH OF MOVEMENT. There is a limit and range of movement that’s specific to each bowler and their anthropometry that they need to stay within. Like all human movement it’s specific to them. So some will have a greater bandwidth than others. That’s why basing your coach intervention method on the visual representation of movement and technique you see is not necessarily the best way I appreciate this is a pretty drastic opinion but it’s the modern opinion based on current expert views and sports science research One other key aspect is the issue is often the ‘bleeding’ of one movement in a certain plane into the other . These are called CONFLICTS of attractors and can often lead to the lumbar stresses seen in fast bowlers So bending forward and side ways at the same time Emergency attractor . RESPECT THE SAGITTAL PLANE WHEN ROTATING It’s not about the occurance of lateral flexion, that has to happen. It’s about the TIMING and AMOUNT. Yep once again it’s about timing of movement and attractors Also key to understand that bowling or throwing a small ball has more options for movement than other overhead throwing sports like the javelin. @devinhayesbaseball . Self organising in a skill with more movement options and affordances is a challenge but every bowler will do it based on what works for them. So some may bend more than others. Thoracic mobility is key.
