We are doing Run for a Reason to raise money for Parkinson’s WA. They help people with Parkinson’s, the nurses know about the latest medicines. They help people by answering questions if you are u sure about anything. Mummy finds it harder to go to work and harder to go to sleep, except for the afternoons and she gets shaky if she doesn’t take her medicine. She can’t do Run for a Reason this year as she just had a foot operation. next year we hope she can walk the course. Thanks Lottie for making a difference! Our goal—a world free of MS. I've signed up for Walk MS—a charity walk that is changing the lives of people with MS and helping fuel progress toward a world free of MS. My sister-in-law, Eve Slaughter, lives with MS. I support the MS Society and serve on the board of the AL, MS, LA MS Society because I want to do everything I can to help Eve and improve the lives of those who live with MS. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. MS is different for everyone, and that makes it all the more challenging to solve. The first Walk MS event was in 1988, and since then more than $920 million has been raised for research and programs to improve the lives of people living with MS. Today, there are treatments where there weren't any before, and the dream of ending MS is becoming a reality. But there is still so much to do. That's why I'm walking. Mixed emotions here to be honest. I am proud that we managed to donate money to a great charity however I woke up at 3am on Saturday, unable to get back to sleep, feeling pretty helpless and thinking how can we do more? With baby number two due at the end of June, I have been thinking more and more about the world in which they will live and it's scary. You don't need me to reel off the 1000's of daily news articles which highlight the sh*t show we are in... the climate and environment is f*cked (aware many other areas of life are in poor shape) and things need to change now. Friends, family, colleagues etc that I speak to feel the same, and as individuals, it's hard (impossible) not to feel powerless. With this in mind, and with it being Earth Day, I wanted to see if others in my network and broader reach feel the same? If we club together can we make an impact and make a difference? I am connected to thousands of business owners, and employees that want things to change... Can we pool together our yearly charity donations so it has more impact? Can we organise monthly clean-up sessions in our local area? Can we put more pressure on governments to act in the face of a climate disaster? This might get a few likes and I'll look like a tool however nothing new there... hopefully however, people will respond and share. No idea where it will take us but I do know we are powerful as a group and time is of the essence. Providing there is a response, it would be great to arrange a time to knock our heads together and come up with some next steps. Sweet friends and community, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your support and share an update on my journey with cancer and the next steps: On May 16th, 2024, I found myself at Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre, ready for surgery to remove the tumour in my colon. The procedure seemed to go well, but a few days later, things took a frightening turn. I developed sepsis, a severe infection that required an emergency second surgery on May 21st. The medical staff worked tirelessly (I have been deeply moved by the level of care, compassion and commitment at DGMC), and by May 29th, I was able to go home, albeit with a stoma bag and a long road of recovery ahead. For the next eight weeks, I focused on healing, counting down the days to July 15th, when I returned to the hospital for a third surgery to reverse the ileostomy. Now, I’m back home, slowly but surely recovering from this intense journey. I’m happy to report that my pain is improving, and I am slowly regaining strength for everyday activities (like walking and cooking, etc). Despite ongoing brain fog and fatigue, I am optimistic. The next step is chemotherapy and the statistics show promise for significantly reducing the chance of my cancer ever returning. We await the results of a genetic test to finalize the treatment plan, but it looks like I will need 4 rounds of chemo over 3.5 months. 💡 What I'm up to while I go through this journey…💡 Of course, my primary objective during this time is to focus on recovery, but part of recovery is hope… And so, I have a couple of projects in progress that I'm excited to work on while I regain my strength: 👉 A collection of poetry (that's been in the pipeline for over 10 years now) 👉 A leadership podcast: speaking to community leaders and artists to build hope for emergent and creative new futures 👉 A healing-focused digital community: a space for wellness workshops, support groups and events that focus on building healing relationships to self and others. Every day we receive messages of thanks from those we have supported. Those who had nowhere else to turn. Families who were feeling overwhelmed and worried about their child's diagnosis of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). With the information and resources that we provided them with and with 1:1 support from our volunteers and access to a peer-to-peer support network, they were given the information and strength they needed to carry on. Many of our resources are recognised as being world-leading resources being translated and used all around the globe. Our awareness initiatives are leading the way in making a real difference to improving earlier diagnosis and helping those with JIA feel less alone. Our own research has been published in scientific journals, presented at international conferences and we have worked with countless other research teams on collaborative projects. All of this has been achieved by our amazing volunteer team in the 6 years since Juvenile Arthritis Research began. But... Our small team of volunteers are so busy doing all these vital areas of work that despite the difference we are making, finding the funding to do all that we do remains our biggest challenge. We currently have an urgent need for funding for a new resource that will save lives. Doctors, medical professionals, volunteers, parents and patients have given their time to create this essential new resource. We now urgently need the funds to get it printed and distributed to reach where it is most needed to make a difference. In the world of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), transition refers to the process of moving from children’s care to adult care. The team of specialists looking after you will gradually change from a team that looks after children to a team of specialists that look after adults. In some cases this may involve changing hospitals too. The transition process aims to ensure that you will have the confidence to eventually see members of your healthcare team independently when you are ready to and enable you to take on responsibility for your own medication and treatments when the time is right for you. We know that hospitals and healthcare teams want to get the transition process right for young people with JIA. So please tell us what went well, what didn’t go so well, or any worries you may have about the transition process and we’ll feed this into the JIA Learn project. We’d also love to hear your ideas for how things can be improved when it comes to the transition process and the transfer from children’s to adult services. Trading your money for a secret Last February 2023 I was diagnosed with a very rare condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a word salad better known as PSC. Two weeks later, doctors told me I also have ulcerative colitis (UC). The first one affects my liver, and the latter my guts, and the two go frequently in pairs. How the heck did I get here? It's a question I ask myself frequently, especially in light of the healthy lifestyle I adopted quite religiously for nearly a decade now. Doctors don't really know, but a mix of genetics, environment, bad luck and possibly psychological factors might have triggered some unknown auto-immune process that scrambles up the very fine balance of the gut-liver axis. The following is more juicy. What does PSC do? PSC is a chronic condition that results in inflammation within the bile ducts of the liver. Inflammation = scarring = buildup of extra tissue. Being the bile ducts essentially tubes, the condition leads to liver fibrosis and then liver failure. The juiciest bit. How is PSC treated? It's not. PSC is a chronic and progressive condition with no known cure and a host of grim co-morbidities and outcomes. Is healing even possible? I've got a slim 5% chance that not all is lost, but like Fox Mulder's poster, I want to believe. I also want to survive, frankly. So for that, I decided that the best course of action is asking for your hard-earned money! I've always been a bit of an exercise aficionado and last summer I returned to running after a lockdown sourdough baking, woodwork making hiatus. Running is helping me strengthen my body and mind, and right now... ...I'm fundraising for PSC Support! PSC Support is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by PSC, and on on Sunday 19 May I will run the lovely London's Hackney Half marathon as a starter run. And I'm planning more in the future! Fundraising has been going incredibly well this far, thanks primarily to the love of my family & friends, and my surrogate one at Kin + Carta. Training is also going oh so well, and I'm already well over my initial target of £2,500, but I want to double it (at least)!
