Traffic lights are designed to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. They are based on the concept of 'traffic control', which is the regulation of the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic lights are one of the most common forms of traffic control, and are used all over the world. There are many good reasons to obey traffic rules. Maybe the most important reason is that it can help save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2018 there were over 36,000 traffic fatalities in the United States. That’s an average of about 100 deaths every day. There are four different types of traffic signs: regulatory, warning, informational, and guide signs. Regulatory signs are the most common type of traffic sign, and are used to inform drivers of the rules of the road. Warning signs are used to warn drivers of potential hazards, and are often red or yellow in color. Informational signs provide drivers with information about their surroundings, and are often blue or green in color. Guide signs are used to help drivers navigate, and are often brown or white in color.

🚦💡 Demystifying Yellow Traffic Lights: What You Need to Know Yellow traffic lights play a crucial role in road safety, signaling drivers to prepare for a stop. However, many are unsure of the rules associated with them. A yellow light means caution; it indicates that the light will soon turn red. Drivers must make a split-second decision to either proceed safely through the intersection or stop, depending on their distance from the light. Understanding this signal is vital for preventing accidents and ensuring smoother traffic flow. Always remember: when in doubt, slow down and prioritize safety! #TrafficSafety #YellowLight #RoadRules #DrivingTips #SafetyFirst https://lnkd.in/dPc-axSq

Research shows most roads designed to change behaviour do not work, even funny ones. Everyone knows they should wear a seat belt, respect speed limits, and avoid texting while they drive. People who break such rules do so not because they are ignorant of them, but because they have chosen to nonetheless take a risk. Messages like “Get your head out of your apps” don’t provide new information, so they won’t prevent most text-happy drivers from reaching for their phone. But, real progress on safety can be made by redesigning roads and enforecement! This is where money should be allocated.

I have not looked at the newest edition of the manual. I provided comments on this topic-the changeable message signs and using them for messages that did not provide actionable information. I did this after several states told me off when I made the recommendation to them directly. Now, I have to go look and see if I really had some impact. Unfortunately, DoTs seem to be lacking safety professionals or a charge to include safety as an aspect of design and implementation. Road safety is decades behind regular safety, which is well behind regular industry. Transportation folks need to reach out to folks that have an expertise and prospective that they are missing. A lot of stuff is rather basic and missed. We, society, already have a lot of good tools that would help make transportation better, we just need the will to include them in the conversation and implement them as we design, build, operate, maintain, etc. the elements of the transportation system.

It is good to see reductions in pedestrian fatalities. I am curious what others feel has contributed to the reduction. It does take a layered approach AND each approach has a different timeline. Regional planning for improved infrastructure can take decades, while road user education can be quicker but takes a LOT of foot work. Dedicating funding to EMS to improve theabity to respond to road use injuries and death is also critical. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/e6Y26AKf
