Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan Malaysia yang ke-66 Malaysia gained independence 66 years ago, but that was not without tremendous hardships and sacrifices of soldiers, ordinary people and heroes during the war. Because of the sacrifices of past Malaysian heroes, we could live a peaceful life now to go wherever we want without curfew and fear during the war time. Celebrating Merdeka is a symbolic moment to recognize the independence, peace and security of Malaysia, which we have been experiencing now since independence. It is also fortunate that the different cultures of Malaysia can live harmoniously together, which is a blessing and a reason to rejoice. Malaysia is home to diverse talents, and an educated workforce that is ready to propel Malaysia to greater heights. Right now, it is important to focus efforts towards nation-building activities to propel Malaysia to greater heights and sustainability and it is fortunate to note that Malaysia has an Energy Transition Road Map in place to shift towards green energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels which will help reduce the impact on climate change. Malaysia also has a melting pot of cuisines which are unique and traditional. Malaysia has indeed been through many challenges but yet it withstood the test of time and tribulations because of the resilience of its citizens and leaders to rebuild and develop the country after independence. Malaysia has come a long way to progress into what it is today, and I am proud to be a Malaysian. No other place in this world will feel more at home than my beloved country, Malaysia. Buses Now! Bridging the Gap in Klang Valley Transport. Malaysia has been building on, and promoting public transport since the 90s. With the increasing number of urban rail lines, it is apparent that this system will never sufficiently serve the Klang Valley area. Our public transport ridership is a mere 20%, as compared to 83% and 80% in Singapore and London. Social Democracy Malaysia is on a journey to advocate for efficient, people-first solutions that will transform our public transport system. We plan to engage in conversation with relevant ministries, members of parliament, and municipal governments, to build on our blueprint for public transport. A total of 17 Big Bold measures are introduced in the 12MP MTR covering 71 main strategies and initiatives that will serve as the main catalyst in accelerating the efforts to reform the socioeconomic development of the nation in line with the Malaysia Madani aspiration. No-frills business networking I had a fruitful, refreshment-free networking session with Ben Lee, a Ph.D. in marine science. Ramadan does not stop me from engaging with business friends and connections while fasting. We discussed his proposed impactful investment projects within the scope of the Blue Economy and logistics in Malaysia. I was happy to share with him my knowledge and experiences about the Malaysian government's policies and facilitations for such investments in the country. I have known Ben Lee since I served at MIDA back then. His knowledge and experience about the blue economy are amazing, and we believe that the blue economy is another new economic frontier for Malaysia that needs to be further explored. When I told him about King Gamat Walit Plus (KGWP), he had no hesitation to purchase one box, since he is fully aware of the medical benefits of sea cucumber for human health. According to Ben Lee, sea cucumber is rich in collagen. In fact, sea cucumber is considered a high-value marine species. FROM CENTRAL EUROPE TO MALAYSIA

I’ve spent the last four days in Johor Bahru Malaysia meeting with officials and business leaders as part of a delegation led by Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence. Aotearoa New Zealand’s engagement with ASEAN has been subject to much recent attention following Prime Minister Luxon’s recent visit to South East Asia, so it’s been timely to experience this first hand. Johor Bahru and Singapore have recently signed a MOU to develop a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), an agreement modelled on the Hong Kong- Shenzhen SEZ. The SEZ will present opportunities and challenges for the local economy and communities, we’ve heard perspectives from both the public and private sectors on how to best capitalise and mitigate these. There are already significant opportunities for New Zealand firms in ASEAN, and the SEZ will open up more opportunities here in Malaysia. Some initial reflections: 💻Malaysia and Aotearoa have some common economic challenges, namely retention of highly skilled local talent and commanding a premium in the market for goods and services with ESG credentials. There’s scope for increased collaboration in this space. ✨There’s a strong presence of Australian and UK firms and education institutions here in JB, however the NZ presence is noticeably weaker. There are abundant opportunities, but repeated engagement and intentional relationship building is required to capitalise on these. Whakawhānaungatanga is a pou of the Māori economy, Māori firms are particularly well placed to do business here. 🌳Sustainability and ESG are front of mind in both the private and public sectors, with 2030 fast approaching, meeting the SDGs will require converting intention into real action. Achieving this whilst remaining competitive in the global market will not be easy, a challenge we also experience in Aotearoa.
