🚶♀️ Starting my LinkedIn journey was far from easy. I’m not a storyteller; writing has never been my strong suit. I can hold senseless and meaningful conversations, and while I might be good company, putting myself out there was a different challenge altogether. But when Vivienne Osaka challenged me to start posting, I felt lost and confused. What could I possibly say? After all, I’m just a finance enthusiast, accountant, and financial analyst—someone who thrives behind the scenes, crunching numbers, generating reports, and crafting financial strategies. 'We always seem to struggle getting our first few invoices paid when we sign a new client'. A quote from a client I've recently started working with. So one of the first things we did was to look at their onboarding process when it came to finance, and it turns out...there was no process. They'd basically winged it so far. Fast forward a few weeks and they've now put in place: ⚫️ A process document talking through the whole process of onboarding a new client in relation to finance & accounts. ⚫️ A project template on their Project Management system for onboarding, with a defined set of tasks that need to be ticked off for EVERY new client. ⚫️ A single champion for managing onboarding in the agency - meaning that a single person is now responsible for making sure clients are set up in the correct way every time. They've already seen much better results with a couple of their newest clients...with 1 even commenting about how 'slick' their process is. You can't optimise and improve them if they're not written out and followed consistently every time 🔍 No structured review Again this is basic project management - if you don't get the basics right first you'll spend all your time unpicking errors later on 🤦♂️ Outsourcing the wrong things Bookkeeping can be boring, but that isn't the same as unimportant. It's the main product that the rest of the business uses. It's something you need to design and automate ✏ Wrong skill mix I see a lot of finance teams start with someone too junior or too senior. The mid operating level is way too often neglected 😶 No touch points with other teams Once you've got the basics right it's time to get out into the business - not only is this the most fun bit but it's where you can have the biggest impact, don't neglect it!
