As 2023 comes to a close, BC Voices’ thanks you for partnering with us in 2023 to launch Stand UP, Speak OUT Episode 3: Reproductive Rights, the story of how critical reproductive rights are to women’s ongoing freedom and independence. In August, BC Voices released the compelling, comprehensive and moving 28-minute historical  documentary, Stand UP, Speak OUT: Reproductive Rights - Know Your Rights, chronicling American women’s 200+ years and ongoing fight for reproductive freedom. It calls on us to Stand UP and Speak OUT until every woman has bodily autonomy, the right to bear or not bear children, and can raise her children in a safe and sustainable community. Our promotion campaign included a screening at a Lush Cosmetics store in Manhattan; and two Zoom watch parties, including a discussion among four distinguished feminist scholars elucidating the race and class complexities of reproductive freedom.  Three of the four short multi-generational conversations comprising Stand UP, Speak OUT: Reproductive Rights – Personal Stories were awarded Best In Social Justice Films by the NYWIFT 2023 Online Shorts Festival  – Sterilization, Birth Control and Abortion. These stories from racially diverse women expose what’s changed, what’s the same, and how far all American women have to go to reach reproductive autonomy. We are reaching out to college professors and civic organizations, letting them know the short documentaries that make up SUSO Episode1: Equal Pay, Episode 2: Voting Rights and Episode 3: Reproductive Rights are available to them, free of charge, to include in courses and events. We hope the Stand UP, Speak OUT Docuseries will inspire the younger generation to join the fight for women's full equality. Coming in 2024, the next chapter in the story of the historically unprecedented lives lived by women over the past 50+ years, Stand UP, Speak OUT Episode 4: To Marry Whom We Love, or, Not At All . With new freedoms and independence since the mid-20th century, many women’s options around partnering and singlehood have expanded – to choose partners regardless of race, gender, faith, and class; to partner multiple times to find the “right” one; to create families with or without partners, without stigma; or to live full lives as single women. Giving To Women, Girls NPOs Tops $10 Billion Women’s and girls’ organizations surpassed $10 billion in giving for the first time, receiving $10.2 billion in philanthropic support during 2021. While awareness of gender-focused issues such as pay equity and reproductive rights has grown, overall charitable giving that supports women and girls remains relatively small at 1.9% of total giving. https://lnkd.in/eWQQETYN

Another powerful idea is establishing philanthropy-driven incubators specifically designed to support social entrepreneurs from underrepresented groups. These incubators would provide would provide funding but also mentorship, training, and access to networks that help turn innovative ideas into scalable businesses or initiatives. When I coached startups at Startup Stockholm, the gap wasn't the money, it was often effective communication and a thorough understanding of emotional intelligence. Why This Matters... Social entrepreneurship offers a sustainable pathway to effect change, but many potential social entrepreneurs lack the resources to get started. Success = Self-Sustainability! By supporting them through targeted incubators, philanthropy can empower a new generation of leaders who are deeply connected to the issues they are solving. Robert F. Smith The idea of leveraging philanthropy means that you want to increase the impact of the original donation. This is done by creating endowment funds rather than spending the money on products, services, or other operating costs. As a former CFO for a nonprofit with an $11.5M endowment fund, I've personally seen the impact of starting with a lump sum of money that grows to give some cash flow towards operating costs, but also continues to grow through proper investment management. Let's apply this to Black nonprofits. Imagine a Black nonprofit with experienced investment management staff who can increase the balance of an endowment by 8% - 10% per year safely using long-term, low risk investments. Half of the annual cash flow from the endowment fund is used towards operating and programmatic costs, which includes grants to other 501(c)3 qualified nonprofits. The remainder of the annual cash is reinvested to grow the endowment fund. The process requires a nonprofit board that has vision, discipline, and an experienced finance staff that knows what they are doing. I'm excited to share in my op-ed in Inside Philanthropy how c3 funds can be deployed to support the nonpartisan, charitable programs at c4 organizations, which legally need to spend the majority of their funds on nonpartisan work. c3 funders can unlock political opportunity by funding all social change leaders for their nonpartisan work, and this will allow us to strengthen democracy and unlock durable social change. https://lnkd.in/e9b3p-ar

Melinda French Gates has announced she is committing an additional US$1bn to advance women’s power globally. "For too long, a lack of money has forced organisations fighting for women's rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense. I want to help even the match," she said. This $1bn commitment will include the following grants made by Pivotal Ventures ⬇ 💰 $200m in grants aimed at supercharging the work of organisations that are fighting in the US to advance women’s power and protect their rights, including reproductive freedom. 💰 $240m devoted to partnerships with a diverse group of 12 global leaders who will each receive a $20m fund to distribute to charitable organisations they consider to be doing urgent, impactful, and innovative work to improve women’s health and well-being in the US and around the world. 💰 $250 million to be awarded through an open call, launching later this year, with Lever for Change to identify organisations working to improve women’s mental and physical health worldwide. https://lnkd.in/eg_rYeKJ

“Decades of research on economics, well-being and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone” “Despite the pressing need, only about 2 percent of charitable giving in the United States goes to organizations focused on women and girls, and only about half a percentage point goes to organizations focused on women of color specifically” How do we bridge this gap? And why does the gap exist in the first place? It is unlikely that we will get to the bottom of those questions anytime soon, let alone within the limited scope of this LinkedIn post. Reflecting on Melinda Gates' inspiring decision to leave the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and commit $1 billion to women's and girls' causes over the next two years, it's evident that some progress will be made. However, without collective effort from all of us, that chasm is destined to remain. Fortunately, there are incredible groups all over the world that have made it their mission to amplify the voices of women and girls within their communities.
