Is there an impending Tiktok ban in Australia? News in from the USA (2 days ago), the platform ban will be written into law. There is little doubt that Australian regulators will be considering the same thing. My ten cents. If you are a business on TikTok and not exploring the potential of Youtube Shorts (and Youtube shop), and/or Instagram Reels, now might be a very good time to do so. Diversifying your strategy could be very wise. There may be a whole lot of displaced TikTok audiences looking for a new home very soon. A lot of livelihoods about to be affected!💸 Just thinking out loud, if ByteDance decides to shut its TikTok operations down in the US, I'm curious how the approx. 150 million DAU would react, since for some Tiktokers it's their only source of income and that's an approx. 7.7 B$ in revenue this year! I think in terms of the platform, people can definitely choose an alternative but the kind of traction you get on TikTok vs other platforms is significantly higher due to their proprietary algorithm. https://lnkd.in/d6ZZei6Z #tiktokban #tech #socialmedia

I know a lot of people don't agree with what I'm about to say, but I think any material defense of keeping TikTok is not only un-American, its borderline treasonous, and it's absolutely exemplary of what's wrong with the U.S. these days. Before folks say I'm being bombastic by using the term "treason"...(1) I'm not blaming people or SMBs who use it. That's fine. There's no harm. I use it! And (2) here's the definition of treason: "It is the act of waging war against the United States or materially aiding its enemies." And there are folks supporting TikTok in material ways; whether it be through promotion, investment, lobbying, or speech. Admittedly though, whether TikTok is an "enemy" of the state is yet to be determined. Thus, I use the term "borderline treasonous", because we don't know the answer to that...yet. However... We do have reports that TikTok has sent the data of U.S. users to foreign adversaries. We do know that Chinese national security laws can force companies like ByteDance to provide data to the Chinese government. We do know that in June 2022, an investigation by BuzzFeed News revealed leaked audio from internal TikTok meetings where ByteDance engineers in China repeatedly accessed non-public data about U.S. TikTok users. https://bit.ly/3TrLPWc We do know there have been instances of controversial moderation practices, such as suppressing videos related to sensitive political issues, including those critical of the CCP. Do we have TikTok dead to rights? No. And we never will. So are we supposed to wait until something bad happens, or can we not make educated assessments about our nation's security and take reasonable action? Let's not forget, TikTok had a chance to implement "Project Texas", where all of their U.S. data was to be anchored in America. They not only failed to do so in a timely manner (18 months and counting), they obfuscated its progress in front of Congress. Which brings me to the fact that we just simply don't get the easy things right anymore. We can't build homes fast enough. We can't agree on the facts. We can't take suicide-causing devices away from our teens. We can't teach our kids to read. We can't even keep the government out of the OBGYN office. And we didn't take down an unidentified object soaring across our country unabated. A year ago, that object was a Chinese weather balloon. Today, it's TikTok. Let's do something about it this time.
I’ll be in court on Monday morning to see TikTok’s legal team argue that a new law that could shut down the app in January is an infringement on Americans’ freedom of speech. Juro Osawa and I have been reporting about what's been going on inside TikTok ahead of this week's oral arguments. Executives have expressed confidence they will be able to delay a ban for half a year or even longer, and are pushing employees to continue with business as usual and chase aggressive revenue and growth goals in the interim. ByteDance is confident it can drag out the process by getting an injunction order, which would prevent the law from going into effect early next year, we report. Company leaders also believe there is a possibility for TikTok to negotiate a solution with the next presidential administration, but they are waiting until after the U.S. election in November, the person said. 🎬 What if your favorite app was suddenly banned? That’s the reality TikTok creators might face, leading them to file a lawsuit against a proposed US law. This law could force TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest or face a ban. On May 14 2024, these influencers took a stand, arguing that such drastic measures would harm their freedom of speech and disrupt their careers. They believe the government's move is more about politics than protecting national security. This legal battle not only underscores the clash between regulation and innovation but also raises critical questions about digital rights and the future of online content creation. #TikTokLawsuit #DigitalRights #SocialMedia #TechNews #USLaw

Hello, Political Posse! Join reporter Vinaya Johnson as she gives an update on TikTok's legal status in the United States. A successful bill was passed in the Senate, which would effectively ban TikTok if the parent company did not take the appropriate steps to sell the company. An already extremely controversial bill, there will most likely be a lot of pushback, particularly from small business owners who use the app to market their products. Make sure you stay tuned for more updates! #ONC #OurNationalConversation #ExplainThatToMeAgain #Politics #TikTok #Senate
