📖 History repeats itself
UGC has been a strong force for creativity in gaming, a prime example being the creation of the MOBA genre. Today, communities deal with different constraints but far better tooling and a much larger audience leading to faster iteration and unique game types.
🚫 Rules aren’t always meant to be broken
Accepted conventions are hard to break in gaming for good reason. Players have certain expectations, and aligning development conventions with player expectations is key to a smooth first-time user experience. The most successful UGC will be those that follow convention.
📱 “Tutorials” have changed
Gone are the days of the 30-minute tutorial. Gaming and social media have been trending towards fast, bite-sized content. Games have to reach content creators to increase discoverability, showcase how they standout, and assist in the new player experience.
🌌 Explore the unknown
The beauty of UGC is that we don’t know the outcome - whether it be the genre, art, or design mechanics that get created. It’s about enablement, and each phase of this enablement brings with it new constraints, new ideas, and new participants.
