Embracing Contradictions: Design & Sustainability Can Tango Ever been to a dance where design and sustainability step on each other's toes? I just read an article that's like a rhythm lesson for those two. See, Steve Wardle, the design operations guy from Kellanova, and Rachel Sheldon, the eco-hero over at her company, shared the floor to talk about how to mesh good looks with being good to the planet. And here's the kicker: "Sustainability needs to be woven into the fabric of design, not just patched on like a last-minute accessory." 💡 That's my jam! At Supergay Spirits, we get it. Our bottles aren't just a pretty face—they're like a high five to Mother Earth. Reading the room, we make choices that don't just look good on paper, but also make sense in the grand scheme of things. And, hey, it's not about following the herd—it's about carving out our own dance moves. Feeling out of step? The Shrinking Canvas: Designing for Sustainability in Packaging 🌍📦 As we embrace sustainability, the packaging industry is undergoing a major transformation. Many brands are moving towards reducing waste by using minimalist designs, cutting down on materials, and shrinking the overall packaging size. But with less space comes a unique design challenge—how do you communicate a brand’s message effectively with reduced real estate? The days of expansive packaging are giving way to a more clinical approach, where every design element must work harder and smarter. This shift forces designers to prioritise simplicity, precision, and clarity, ensuring that branding, product information, and eco-messaging are all communicated without overwhelming the consumer. While it presents challenges, it’s also an opportunity to refine and elevate design thinking. Less really can be more! What are your thoughts on packaging waste and the impact of sustainable design? 💬 ♻ #SustainableDesign #EcoFriendlyPackaging #PackagingInnovation #DesignForSustainability #GreenPackaging #MinimalistDesign #WasteReduction

In the world of trends and the next big thing, what role does sustainability play in design? We asked our #DesignCollective community member Shashank Nimkar his thoughts on creating timeless design. "Trends are like waves that hit the shores every hour and disappear but sustainability is like the ocean that stays deep for generations, connecting the world. Something that is designed mindfully to cater any respective needs of an individual or society at large will always find the user base in every era. Design driven by sustainability addresses concerns at each stage, from raw material procurement to manufacturing, packaging to end-of-life processing or application. We may find limited options or variety among the sustainably designed solutions, perhaps because there are a few ways that enable human-nature synergy, everything else is an abuse for human convenience. I try to work with first principles, deriving inspirational analogies from materials or systems in nature to design universal materials or incorporating design for - durability, dismantling, repair, recycling, repurpose and collaboration. When we have a purpose to design for an impact, trends don’t matter." Shashank is the founder and CEO of Earth Tatva – Recycled Ceramics and is a multi-award winning designer who practices circular design through industrial design, animation and policy framing. He is recognized as a circular economy pioneer by Ellen MacArthur Foundation and has been felicitated with prestigious awards at Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival and James Dyson Award, among others. He is highly passionate about materials, their application and how they can be kept in use to accelerate circular economy. #design #sustainability #sustainabledesign #designtrends
