Great news that the #NPPFconsultation is addressing the historic undersupply of housing but what will this mean for the renewable energy sector? Public support for renewable energy is high for solar and wind, but our research shows battery energy storage systems - vital for making renewable energy more cost effective and efficient, and newer low-carbon technologies such as hydrogen don't harness nearly the same levels of support. For renewable energy projects the NPPF consultation guidance for decision makers is to “…give significant weight to the proposals contribution to renewable energy generation and a net zero future…” What will this mean in practice for renewable energy proposals when land is limited? Will housing be prioritised over low-carbon energy developments? At Shared Voice we have a proven record of connecting supporters of developments with the planning process - significantly reducing the planning risk and ensuring that projects get built. Building a Reliable Renewable Energy Future As we shift to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, we face new challenges. A recent case study highlights the importance of high standards in manufacturing and quality assurance. The GE Vernova and Vineyard Wind 1 project experienced a failure in turbine components, resulting in debris washing ashore and disrupting the project. This incident serves as a reminder that the stakes are high, and the impact of renewable energy projects extends beyond energy generation to the health of our ecosystems. Investing in renewable energy requires significant upfront costs and innovation to reduce costs and enhance efficiency. However, prioritizing quality and accountability is crucial to ensure reliable renewable energy systems. We must learn from experiences like the Vineyard Wind 1 project and establish rigorous quality assurance processes to mitigate risks. ⚡ Interested in the BIG PICTURE when it comes to EU ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE? While modern energy solutions like rooftop solar panels, heat pumps, local energy communities, electric vehicles, offshore renewable energy installations, and renewable hydrogen production are driving Europe’s transition away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner energy sources, this comes with an increased demand on our energy infrastructure. Based on the Commission’s European Grid Action Plan, published in November 2023, €584 billion in investment will be needed by 2030 to meet this growing electricity demand. This figure must also be supplemented by the substantial investment needed to build the EU’s hydrogen system from the ground up. Large projects are clustered in PCI/PMI and the PCI-PMI Transparency platform provides and interactive map with up-to-date information on each project’s geographic positioning, implementation plan, benefits to the countries involved and the potential EU financial support available to that project.
