South Gippsland Shire Council has unanimously adopted the South Gippsland and Latrobe City Renewable Energy Impact and Readiness Study 🙌   Gippsland is one of six Renewable Energy Zones in Victoria, and is the focus of a series of major renewable energy development proposals. This includes nationally significant offshore wind projects off the southern coast of Gippsland; an area declared as the first zone for offshore wind generation in Australia.   South Gippsland Shire Council, Latrobe City Council and Regional Development Australia Gippsland recognised the need to understand, and strategically plan for long term renewable energy investment in Gippsland to optimise benefits that flow to the local economy and community, and mitigate any potential issues that may arise from the delivery of projects.   The Study seeks to identify, understand and plan for issues and spatial implications for urban land supply and supply chain requirements across business, labour and housing. Yet, hurdles remain. Issues of funding accessibility, supply chain delays, and the unique logistical challenges of island environments complicate progress. The need for comprehensive financing solutions, public-private partnerships, and tailored energy systems is paramount to overcoming these obstacles. Furthermore, SIDS are exploring cutting-edge technologies like tidal and wave energy, exemplified by projects in Orkney and Hawaii, which harness the power of ocean currents. These initiatives not only demonstrate technological innovation but also underscore the potential for renewable energy to meet baseload electricity demands in geothermally rich islands like Dominica. As these islands strive towards full renewable integration, they offer valuable lessons for the global community. Their experiences in navigating energy transitions amidst geographic constraints and environmental vulnerabilities can inform broader efforts towards decarbonization worldwide. The success of initiatives in places like El Hierro and the partnerships being forged with international entities highlight the transformative impact of sustainable energy investments. "In a study of 18,400 universities in 196 countries, 68% of all energy educational degrees are still focused on fossil fuels and only 32% on renewable energy" (World Energy Council)😯 This statistic is quite alarming. How are we to reach our 2030 goals for the energy transition, if at this rate there won't be sufficient skilled workforce?
