🌞🌊 New Report on Environmental Effects of Floating Solar 🌊🌞 We are thrilled to see the release of the report, "Environmental and societal effects and impacts of hydro floating solar power plants" This groundbreaking study by The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), SINTEF and Institute for Energy Technology provides much needed guidelines for the floating solar industry to address the environmental and social impacts of floating solar installations on hydropower reservoirs. Key Findings: 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: Allowing space between FPV floaters we can improve water quality, supporting aquatic life and maintaining ecosystem balance. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: By blocking gas exchanges, FPV systems can reduce the release of greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide from the water into the atmosphere. This helps in lowering overall greenhouse gas emissions. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀: Community involvement can increase project acceptance, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits and minimizing negative impacts on livelihoods and cultural practice We believe that this report will serve as a valuable resource for the sustainable development and deployment of floating solar technology. Together, we can harness the power of the sun to create a greener and more sustainable future. 💨🐦 How can we advance the expansion of wind energy and protect biodiversity at the same time? 🤝This question is often discussed in the media. EUKI project #Wind4Bio is working on an answer. The project's name speaks for itself: #Wind4Bio promotes the convergence of wind energy and biodiversity policies by involving civil society to find a consented transition to renewable energy sources. 📑In their latest report #Wind4Bio evaluates a consultation mechanism developed for the project. It is an online platform that facilitates communication between environmental and civil society organisations regarding biodiversity threats in areas with wind farms. The report outlines the development process, testing feedback from partners like Green Liberty | Zaļā brīvība and WiseEuropa, and provides recommendations for improving the online platform. If you are involved in any form or development in the #marine realm, this blog by my ERM colleagues Ian Reach and Matthew Kyle-Henney is well worth a read. Why? It shows that by prioritizing ecological integrity, marine development projects can align with regulatory standards, mitigate public opposition, and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable future. And we have established tools to help achieve that outcome.
As we continue to strive for a more sustainable future, the critical role of biodiversity and our interconnectedness with Earth's species become increasingly clear. Marine development will play a pivotal and expanding role in the transition to renewable energy. Marine renewable projects, including offshore wind arrays, are rapidly growing in both number and scale globally. To ensure these projects are environmentally responsible, continuously evaluating and updating best practices is essential. This includes leveraging emerging technologies to identify and mitigate potential adverse impacts. Staying ahead of these critical insights is key to preventing unintended consequences and addressing sensitive site considerations. Our 2024 heat mapping methodologies represent a significant evolution of the approaches first introduced by Marinespace (now part of ERM) in 2013 for the UK marine minerals industry. These methodologies have since become standard best practice for UK Marine Environmental Impact Assessments. Importantly, their application extends beyond any single marine species, industry, or geographic region, with growing use across diverse marine sectors worldwide. By prioritizing ecological integrity, marine development projects can align with regulatory standards, mitigate public opposition, and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable future.
