ANY #BERLIN-BASED ANTI-FASCIST OUT THERE? I’m super-thrilled to lead a political imagination workshop at Publix, Berlin, hosted by the multitalented team at SUPERRR Lab. We will be using methodologies I developed with the Israeli-Palestinian peace movement A LAND FOR ALL to rapidly prototype multiple images of the future in the form of screenshots (more on that in the comments) and to use them to map affordances for urgent action in the thick present. On a somber note, ours is obviously not a success story. Fighting fascism in Israel is a work in progress, a painful, brutal daily reality. Unfortunately, as horrible as it may be to admit it, German fascism is not a thing of the past. And the current relationship between our countries is not truely committed to NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE! On May 23, the Carolinian Political Science Society filmed its last Diskurso episode with the theme, “Kambalingan (Dignified Return): Amplifying the Call of the Marawi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)”, which features the Justice for Marawi, Justice for All Movement. This episode encourages solidarity and participation among concerned institutions, organizations, and individuals and develop a movement against all proxy wars, occupation, and wars of aggression for the sake of business and profit but at the expense of the oppressed people. A new paper is out! In these mad times, I can't be happy but am proud that my latest paper "Presentation of National Identity on Social Media in Times of Crises: The Case of a Palestinian Anti-Violence Movement in Israel," has been published on Media, Culture and Society. This paper presents an inductive study focusing on the case of the United Fahmawi Movement (الحراك الفحماوي الموحد) that led anti-violence protest in the first half of 2021. I present the main components of the collective identity presented by the movement and the perception of social media by the movement's leaders. The paper offers a view of social movements' media perception and use in times of crisis. Specifically, citizen-state relations are introduced as a basis for the communicative discourse of protest movements. The article suggests that the use of social networks is in itself an aspect of protest activity when one of the perceived sources of the crisis is the conflict between different narratives and frames of the crisis itself. Meanwhile, its enemies came out of the woodwork in Europe and North America as antisemitic and anti-Zionist demonstrations exploded on college campuses and city streets. From Houthi attacks on international shipping to “tentifadas” on American campuses, it is not hard to see that something more than just support for Gaza is at work here. Many different groups are hitching a ride on the Israel-Palestine conflict.  What are the hidden agendas of antisemites and anti-Zionists? What are the implications of this agenda for national security? And what is to be done? Here is my analysis of how weaponization of antisemitism by pro-Israeli political activists and organizations perpetuates Islamophobia. Their arguments are grounded in racist notions that Muslims and Palestinians are terrorists, hateful people, and a threat to security. What evidence do they point to? Demands for equality and human dignity for Palestinians and accountability to nations that deny them these basic human rights. Watch and share widely!
