Still buzzing from an awesome startup/tech event at The 1904 in Braselton, GA by Braselton Tech and ATDC yesterday evening! It brings so much joy to my heart to see innovation taking root beyond Atlanta, especially in places like Braselton (about an hour northeast or WAY more, depending on our infamous Atlanta traffic). This is right in my back yard… truly a dream come true for this traffic-hating, time protective gal! My background in VC stems from a deep interest in economic development. I've always believed that a thriving tech ecosystem can really transform an area by bringing in companies and jobs, talent, and ultimately boosting quality of life. Seeing the Town of Braselton GA and its economic development department team up with ATDC to build this kind of community is exactly what I love to see. We chatted about everything from robotics, medtech, critical infrastructure startups, to defense tech and more. Met some incredibly smart people and hopefully added something useful to the mix. Plus, made some new friends… always a bonus! 🙂 If you're interested in this space and being a part of a budding ecosystem, there's a startup pitch competition coming up in Braselton this September that I’ll link in the comments. NYC Tech Week was perfect. (regardless of the dumb look on my face) I met so many amazing people, from founders to funders and everything in between. Yesterday, I stepped into Y Combinator's new San Francisco home for the first time. As an alum, the experience was both nostalgic and a revelation. I realized it is more than just an office; it has evolved into what might be described as the most dynamic hub for early-stage startups. Founders bump into each other in the hallways, share a coffee, and swap ideas that could be the next big thing. We had our Mind Data offsite meeting in Cambridge last week. 🏰 As a remote-first startup, it was incredible to spend the day as a team. We kicked off with a revisit of our vision, reflections over the past 12 months and where we're heading over the next year and five years ("what's our moonshot?"). My biggest takeaway though? 🤔 👇 Building a startup can often be super difficult, personally and professionally. But when you get into a room of inspiring and very, very clever people who care about your startup as much as you do, you've won the lottery. 🚀 💙 For any startup founder out there who's struggling/stressed/burned out... try not to lose sight of the fact that we're still ultimately incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to do this, no matter how challenging it can be. Going beyond simply ranking startup ecosystems The more we dig into innovation ecosystems the more we find the usual suspects. Silicon Valley, East Coast and LA lead the US scene. The most interesting part is to determine how fast the new emerging ecosystems are growing (and how innovation politics and initiatives can speed up their growth). That's what Startup Ecosystem Stars does: benchmarking the ones that are found fast tracks. Reflections on the Tech Summit at Lambeau Field... 1️⃣ The quality of deal flow continues to rise. I continue to be amazed by the startups that I meet and the problems being solved. 2️⃣ There is a net-gain in quality startup founders and investors. COVID set into motion a remote talent distribution across the U.S. that Greater Green Bay and Wisconsin is a significant beneficiary of. E.g. At the conference, I met a founder, originally from Wisconsin, whose startup went through Y Combinator, raised several million, and the CEO recently relocated to Wisconsin to be closer to family. Such a vignette above is happening with increasing frequently in my conversations - be it a startup CTO, VC investor, etc. Those who have had excellent careers in startups and VC elsewhere are coming back to Wisconsin and finding their best life. 3️⃣ Specific to Green Bay, several times at yesterday's conference, I was asked a version of, "Are you guys having a good time here in Green Bay? It seems like you are." My response - We're at an exciting moment of time. In Green Bay, TitletownTech catalyzed a wave of what I see as what was a unrealized potential for the area. They invest in startups, have the magnetic ability to bring super talented founders to the area, and are in it for the long-game. Additionally, the Greater Green Bay Chamber Economic Development's efforts, Startup Wisconsin, and Tundra Angels has led to much more fertile ground in startups and venture capital in Northeast Wisconsin. The word on the street is energetic! Kudos to Tom Still, Angela Schlobohm, Joe Kremer, and the rest of the team at the Wisconsin Technology Council for putting on a great conference!
