Did you know that confidence is closely linked to academic performance? Students with self-confidence believe in themselves and their ability to learn and achieve and, therefore, are more likely to rise to a challenge. Speaking about mistakes as learning opportunities or pointing out your child's growth as a result of their own efforts can go a long way. During one of our regular conversations with teachers about the feedback on our researched content and materials, we heard a heartfelt and inspiring story from one of the teachers, Simmi (not her real name), a third-grade math teacher. Simmi was excited about the new school year and her new students. Early into the year, one child in particular caught her attention. Simmi distinctly recalls, "In the first 2-3 months, she was performing well both academically and in co-curricular activities." However, as the term progressed, 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿. The student started to lose interest in studying and fell behind. Simmi found out this was not just happening in her class; the student's other teachers and parents had noticed it as well. The parents had even sought counseling. Things got more worrying when the child tried to cheat on a test by swapping her answer sheet with one of her classmates and changing their names on the sheet. Simmi could not understand and thought, "𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝟯𝗿𝗱-𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲?" After several discussions with all parties involved, including the parents and the external counselor, there was a consensus to focus on boosting the student's self-confidence. Simmi made it a point to have one-on-one conversations with the student and consistently motivated her in class. Before tests, Simmi would speak with the invigilators, telling them, "𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀; 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽." These simple yet meaningful actions eventually helped and the student began to improve. 𝘚𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘪 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳 4𝘵𝘩 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦.
