Addressing this may enhance the benefit of MRFF to Australian public health. Counterintuitively, less than half of the research projects funded under this Initiative were actually public health-focused. This translates to less than 40c in every $1 spent in this Initiative truly going to public health and prevention.  “Even within those projects that were ‘prevention’ focused, there was little focus on primary prevention research – initiatives that stop Australians from getting sick in the first place, rather than early detection, treatment or slowing disease progression. “To take the burden off the health system, we need to invest in genuine public health and prevention research,” Associate Professor Coombe says. Dr Saman Khalatbari-Soltani from the University of Sydney School of Public Health says that a lack of public health and prevention focused research was also found in other MRFF Initiatives. #prevention #research #healthcare #publichealth

The rate of trust in physicians went from about 70 % down to about 40 % during Covid (acc: 2020 - 2024). More than two years ago, in the aftermath of the pandemic and our insights from the relief work we did on the ground - we decided to address the severe deficit of primary health care access for rural/peri-urban under-privileged communities. It was a decision based on real, felt issues on the ground - and our own deep roots of over a decade of work in rural areas. Over these two years, One Billion Literates Foundation has established a very strong model of primary health care access, with a deep focus on prevention & mitigation of cardio-vascular diseases and strokes in these populations. The data and insights from our community-based and human-centric model shows that alternate approaches that establish community resilience, and build accessible, available, affordable and acceptable healthcare services is possible. And scalable. Our insights and experience on the ground also revealed other Life Limiting Illnesses which are deeply neglected in such communities; and no one really talks about. These include concerns over increasing trend in cancers, as well as the intersectionality of Geriatric, Palliative and Mental health care in rural communities. Over multiple conversations - it was clear to us that we need to do something in these oft-ignored spaces. I am incredibly excited to welcome on board Dr Gopukrishnan Pillai as the co-director of our public health portfolio of work. He joins Dr Roopa Devadasan, who has led the amazing work that we have done over the last couple of years, and together they will co-lead the extension of our work into the additional areas of early screening, detection & treatment of oral, breast and cervical cancers, and establishing models to address the intersectionality of geriatric, palliative and mental healthcare in rural/peri-urban under-privileged communities. Laboratory services are an essential component of a high-quality healthcare system for detecting diseases with public health implications. Patient satisfaction with laboratory services is critical to giving appropriate therapy. The study sought to determine the level of satisfaction among patients with lab services at secondary-level facilities. The current study at two secondary-level hospitals in Bangladesh's north region found that over sixty percent of respondents were satisfied with laboratory services, which were measured using indicators of basic laboratory services, laboratory physical facilities, and laboratory personnel approach. This study emphasized the need to enhance the quality of laboratory services provided in secondary-level healthcare facilities to satisfy patients' expectations. Our groundbreaking research, featured in the December 2023 issue of the Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (JAMDA Journal), sheds light on the resilience and adaptability of PACE organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. As PACE organizations pivoted to deliver services primarily in participants' homes, our findings reveal a significant shift towards continued care at home. This reinforces the crucial role of integrated payments and person-centered care in long-term services and support programs. Our research amplifies the importance of adaptable strategies in delivering quality care while emphasizing the significance of integrated payments and person-centered approaches. I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest article titled "Exploring COVID-19 patient's dignity and satisfaction: A cross-sectional study".  Our study highlights : 1. COVID 19 patient’s perceived dignity was strongly positively correlated to their satisfaction of health care services.  2. Among sociodemographic, level of education is associated with patients' dignity and satisfaction; so that more level of education, higher perceive dignity and satisfaction. 3. Lack of underlying diseases was highly correlated with more sense of dignity among patients  4. The longer the patients were hospitalised, the less dignity they perceived.

In the last decade surgical care has been propelled into the public health domain with the establishment of a WHO designated programme and key publications. The passing of the historic World Health Assembly Resolution acknowledged surgical care as a vital component towards achieving UHC. Our GFMER team with partners conducted the first worldwide survey three years ago to explore the perception of surgical care as a public health issue. The cross-sectional survey was designed to gauge awareness on SDGs, UHC, WHO programmes and key publications on surgical care as well as perception of surgical care as a priority topic in public health. The study showed that there is still a widespread gap in awareness on the importance of surgical care as a public health issue and was not seen as a priority to reach the SDGs, less visible as a WHO programme and not perceived as an important topic for public health courses.
