As renewable energy becomes more prevalent, how can we ensure the electric grid withstands the impact of extreme weather? In a first-of-its-kind study, analysts from NREL and Sharply Focused modeled scenarios to understand the answers to these questions and change the way we define "extreme weather." The study found that traditional extreme weather events don't necessarily pose greater challenges to a grid with more wind and solar power. However, prolonged moderate weather conditions, like several days of low wind and solar energy during hot or cold spells, could create new challenges. This highlights the need for new strategies to ensure the reliability and resilience of a future renewable energy grid. 🔋 What is grid-scale storage? 🔋 The way we generate and store #electricity is changing. Grid-scale storage technologies are becoming really important to ensure a #reliable and #efficient power #grid. Energy storage technologies, like pumped hydropower and batteries, act as giant reservoirs of excess energy (sunny days for solar ☀) and releasing it back to the grid when demand is high (like evenings when everyone is going back home 🌃). 👇 Here is why they are important 👇 ✅ Improve #integration - They can integrate more renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are variable, into the grid. ✅ Improve grid #stability - Storage helps to prevent blackouts and power surges by responding to sudden changes in demand.  ✅ Reduce #reliance on fossil fuels: By storing excess #renewable #energy, we can decrease our #dependence on traditional #power #plants. Indeed, solutions like pumped-storage #hydropower is still the most widely deployed storage technology, but grid-scale #batteries are catching up fast, offering #flexibility for sub-hourly, hourly, and daily balancing needs. The total installed #capacity reached nearly 28 GW by the end of 2022, with most additions happening in the past 6 years. The recent total solar eclipse showed how important solar energy is. Over 31 million people live where the eclipse was seen. When the sun was blocked, the power from solar panels dropped too. This made it clear we need better ways to get energy. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, all 50 states experienced disruptions in solar power generation during the eclipse. This means we need stronger energy systems. When people with solar panels needed more power, they had to use the regular grid. But this made the demand for electricity go up a lot. Even though we didn't have blackouts, the increased reliance on hydropower and gas contributes to heightened pollution levels, particularly in communities neighboring fossil fuel power plants. Even though solar energy has improved, we still need better ways to store it. More money needs to go into making sure we have enough clean energy. One good idea is using pumped hydropower storage instead of gas power plants. This helps stop pollution from fossil fuels. The eclipse showed that our power grid needs to be stronger. Weekly power simulation, week 6 of 2024 Another very windy week, almost exclusively powered by renewable energy. Interestingly, Thursday night saw wind and solar generation drop to almost zero for a few hours. Here, the model's five hours' worth of storage kicks in to fill the gap. But what's important is not so much whether the storage can fill the gap entirely - what's important is its ability to reduce the need for other generation or imports. In this case, the shortfall is reduced from app. 8.4GW to 3.2GW. By no means a trivial task, but there's a huge difference between needing 3.2GW, and needing 8.4GW. ----- Each week, I run a simulation using real-world generation data from the Danish power grid, with #windenergy and #solarenergy scaled to match future (2033) capacities, as forecasted by the Danish Energy Agency. The renewable/fossil debate is irrelevant today. Urgency is to focus on non CO2-emitting energies if we want to limit our impact on climate.

Renewable Energy can come from many sources. But wind and solar power are those that can be setup in more places in the world and allow access to lower cost, cleaner energy sources that we need in the decarbonization journey. The growth in these energy types in the last decade has been great.
