Early Childhood Educators provide amazing learning experiences for children. They create experiences that are thought-provoking, challenging, and introduce the world to them with endless possibilities. I believe this must always include opportunities to take risks. Through "safe risks" is where children build courage and tenacity. When children grow it's quite a sight. They learn so much from day to night. But here’s a truth we can't dismiss, They need to take a little risk. In "safe risk" play, there's room to fall, But not too far, not much at all. They stretch their skills, they test their mind, And learn to leave their fears behind. It’s in the wobble and the shake, Where growth occurs and futures wake. For courage builds when faced with fright, And perseverance shines oh so bright. They learn their strength, their place, their part, It sparks the flame in every heart. To problem-solve, and understand, That “Yes, I can!” is close at hand. In a world that’s safe, but far from bland, We guide them with a steady hand. We let them leap, we let them try, We let them reach beyond the sky. For one day soon, they’ll spread their wings, Achieving all their dreams and things. While revisiting my notes from 2023, I came across a powerful concept that continues to resonate with me: Self-protective givers are generous, but they know their limits. Instead of saying yes to every help request, they look for high-impact, low-cost ways of giving so that they can sustain their generosity — and enjoy it along the way. Selfless givers have high concern for others but low concern for themselves. They set few or no boundaries, making them especially vulnerable to takers. By ignoring their own needs, they exhaust themselves and paradoxically end up helping others less. As we navigate our professional lives, we often play various roles:  ▪️Experts share knowledge.  ▪️Coaches teach skills.  ▪️Mentors provide advice and guidance.  ▪️Connectors make introductions.  ▪️Extra-milers show up early, stay late, and volunteer for extra work.  ▪️Helpers offer hands-on task support and emotional support. These diverse forms of giving contribute significantly to our growth and impact. However, it's vital to strike a balance between being a giver and ensuring our own well-being to be the best giver we can be. Let's remember that by taking care of ourselves, setting boundaries, and being mindful of our capacity, we can continue to be effective and impactful in our professional journeys.

When my mother left for one of her diplomas, I was only 10 years old with a 6-month-old baby. No, the baby wasn’t mine—it was hers. I wasn’t as wild back then to get a baby at that age. My mum had just given birth through a C-section when her college chance came knocking. Knowing what I do now about C-section wounds, I doubt her wound was even dry, considering how amateur surgery was back then. But she got such golden opportunities once in every two to three childbirths, so if she let it slide, the next chance would have been after three more children or never. She didn’t even blink before accepting it. She cried for her baby day and night, but she also knew that if she didn’t take action to change our status, we’d always live in poverty, including that baby. So she left for college, leaving me in charge. I was the first-born daughter, so naturally, all mothering duties fell on my lap unopposed. My two older brothers were in upper primary classes, and my younger sister was in lower primary. At just 10, I had four children to care for, one of them a 6-month-old baby. None of my own. I had to cook for them, wash their clothes, clean up after them, shout at them, and generally ensure they stayed alive. Taking care of the baby was pure hell, especially at first. I didn’t know what to do with such a tiny human being. When he cried, I didn’t understand why, so I cried with him. When he made a mess of himself, I made an even bigger mess in a failed attempt to clean it. I once gave him my lip to suck on when he was hungry because, somehow, that calmed him. When my dad returned, my lower lip was the size of a small balloon. It took three whole years for my mum to come back home fully. By far, that was the hardest time of my life. It affected me in ways I can and can’t articulate. I don’t think I’m ready to talk about it fully yet, but it also influenced my growth in a few ways, despite how small, tiny, and underaged I was. -I am quite strong and determined, skills that have carried me through numerous challenges since then. -Taking on the role of caregiver at such a young age made me into a responsible person. -The struggle of caring for a baby and my siblings built a deep empathy in me, helping me understand and connect with others on a deep level. -Managing a household independently taught me self-reliance and independence, which has served me well in adulthood. The Power of Believing in Your Children 🌟 It’s easy to get caught up in traditional markers of success—like degrees or perfect scores—but sometimes, the best investment we can make in our children isn’t about ticking boxes. A very good friend of mine worked hard and used her income to prioritise her children with private schooling and while none of them ended up with degrees, they’re all thriving in high-flying careers. Success looks different for everyone. One of her children, a brilliant and creative soul with autism, found school very difficult, she also doubted her own ability, thinking she would struggle to pass her recent English gcse. Instead of accepting that, her mom invested in her potential—hiring a tutor, believing in her when others didn’t. That same child went on to score one of the highest results in her year. 🙌 The moral of the story?
