Some of the worst and most painful nonhealing leg wounds are those caused by peripheral arterial disease, and a high percentage of those wounds are the reason why legs are amputated. Many of these amputations are linked to peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which affects an estimated 10 to 12 million Americans. Unfortunately, many patients are not aware that they suffer from PAD, which is widely misunderstood by the public and often goes undiagnosed. Early disease detection is imperative if an individual suffers from a nonhealing leg wound. September is national peripheral arterial disease awareness month and an excellent reminder to question whether this condition is the reason why a leg wound is not healing despite adequate treatment. Nurse practitioners at On Call Wound Care can accurately diagnose PAD and refer patients to a vascular specialist to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team approach to help their wounds to heal. If your wound is not healing well, do not wait. Please contact us : 🖥️ oncallwoundcare.com 📞 239-292-7720 #woundhealing #PADAwareness #September #oncallwoundcare

📢 The measles outbreak is growing each and every day. Close to 60 cases now reported in the U.S. across 17 states. The timely identification and management of measles cases is crucial as it allows for prompt isolation of the infected individual, reducing the risk of further community transmission. But with most healthcare professionals never seeing an actual case of measles, would your team be able to spot it? Would you be able to keep it from spreading through your hospital? Picture this: An adult presents to your hospital emergency department with fever, a widespread exanthematous rash and these oral lesions. Would your emergency department triage nurse recognize this before the patient waits in your crowded waiting room? Will your physicians and APP’s know? 👇 This patient had measles. Think about that. Do they have the tools need to quickly identify, isolate, and treat?

Board director, communications expert and consultant to health organisations. Passionate about consumer engagement, advocacy and advancing medical research.
It was 2am. My son was in hospital (a common occurrence) when he rang. My sleep-deprived brain quickly sprang to attention. “Mum the night nurse has blocked me from going out of my room.” Me: “Wait. What? Why?” “She didn’t swab the end of my line when hooking me up (to I/V antibiotics) and wouldn't do it even when I asked her to.” Me: “So why is she blocking you from going out of your room?” “Because I said I wanted to talk to the head nurse on the ward cos I’m worried about getting an infection.” Thankfully, if I’ve taught my son one thing, it is how to advocate for yourself as a patient. Swabbing (or disinfecting) an intravenous line is standard procedure when exposing or handling the tip of it to help prevent bacteria from getting into the bloodstream. Once he spoke to the head nurse and we (politely but firmly) escalated our concerns to the consultant on rounds the next day, steps were put in place to prevent this from happening again. Thankfully this incident was a rare occurrence but today, on WHO’s World Patient Safety Day, it is important to remember that under the Australian Standards (https://lnkd.in/g_XZUQVz) that apply to all health services, you have the right to be “cared for in an environment that is safe and makes me feel safe” If you are a patient, or caring for someone who is, don’t stay silent if concerned about safety. Advocate. Escalate. #patientsafety #patientadvocacy #worldpatientsafetyday

Rapid assessment, stabilization and treatment are essential when patients need emergency care. The main goal is to quickly address the immediate health issue to stabilize the patient, relieve pain and prevent further complications. When medical attention is urgently needed, minutes – even seconds – matter. That’s why we know it’s important that our state-of-the-art facilities are located close to where our patients live. It’s important that we offer little to no waiting time when patients walk through our doors. It’s important that they know they’ll receive empathetic care from our expert medical teams. And because accidents, injuries and illnesses can occur at any hour of any day, it’s important that we’re open 24/7, 365 days a year. Most of all, we know you are important, and we’ll do everything we can to help you heal. #EmergencyCare #Patients
