🏘️ It was great to catch up with communications colleagues old and new at yesterday’s National Housing Federation Comms & Influencing in Housing Conference 2025. 🏘️ The day was jam-packed with brilliant speakers and valuable insight and we’ve certainly got some great ideas building for what we could do in the future.   Three key takeaways: 💡 People are at the heart of what we do, and their stories deserve to be heard. Many speakers emphasised the importance of sharing these stories with the right audience, combining evidence and data with real-life case studies to build the case for great social housing. 💡 Local engagement is crucial. Don’t be afraid to keep reaching out and building relationships with the audiences that matter. Media consumption may be shifting, but public perception of our sector remains as important as ever. That starts locally and builds from there. 💡 Our sector needs to tell its story with a unified voice and simple messaging. Use human language and highlight the many benefits that safe, secure and affordable homes bring to society. Comms teams have a fundamental role to play in the perception of housing associations and we can help shape that messaging right across our organisations.   Looking forward to the 2026 edition already. 📅   #NHFComms #communications #housing

"ASK FOR FORGIVENESS, NOT PERMISSON" I've just come across this nice report from the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce on the Marrons / Shakespeare Martineau / Ampa - Legal & Professional Services #VibrantPlaces report and launch event last month; and this was one of the key themes of the evening. In order to deliver Vibrant Places you need to take action, move forwards, do anything, but make sure you do something. It seems that this is the current approach of the New Government. With the new 300 planning officers promised, it may not be a case of asking for forgiveness, but at least there will be people in post to grant permission. If those in post don't rightfully grant permission, or are too slow to do so, it appears that following Chancellor Rachel Reeves' speech yesterday, ministers will take matters into their own hands to ensure that the right decision is met within reasonable timeframes - seemingly with a YIMBY preference. What will be interesting to see over the next few weeks (or even days/hours on their current timescales!) will be what emphasis is placed on design quality and build quality of new developments and homes. Balancing placemaking and build quality with expedited delivery will be crucial in solving the housing crisis in a sustainable way.
