Performance improvement in the OR is not only about mastering technical skills. The psychological health of the surgeon–their performance mindset–plays a critical role as well. In mini-podcast episode #107, Jeffrey Smith, MD talks with James Naples, MD, about employing performance psychology to reflect on emotions before, during, and post surgery to control anxieties and improve performance and outcomes. "If she did nothing, she would've gotten better really fast." A patient goes in for a lower back pain and is given an MRI, opioids, and told she'll likely need surgery. This is the exact type of case that Heidi Ojha built Aware Health for: not only would the patient be saving time and money by not going through the surgical system, she's also avoiding taking opioids and the risking an unnecessary surgical procedure. To hear Heidi's solution to stories like these, check out the full episode of Self-Funded with Spencer, available now on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Podcasts. #MSKHealthcareCosts #ConservativeCare #BehavioralHealthExpenses #EmployerPlanSpend #FeeForServiceModel #DataAccessibility #DiagnosticAlgorithms #PatientEmpowerment #HealthcareSystemsOptimization #AvoidingSurgeries #ChronicHealthcareSpending #PatientCenteredCare #selffunded #podcast

One of the biggest factors determining whether you'll get surgery or not: your zip code. Heidi Ojha shared with me just why that is, and why there's so much pressure on surgeons in the current system to perform surgery, even when not necessary. In this longer clip from this week's Self-Funded with Spencer, Heidi also shared the story of one of her former students who was fired from the practice he was working at for...having better outcomes 🤦♂️ We hope you like seeing these longer clips on Wednesdays, and be sure to check out the full episode on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. #MSKHealthcareCosts #ConservativeCare #BehavioralHealthExpenses #EmployerPlanSpend #FeeForServiceModel #DataAccessibility #DiagnosticAlgorithms #PatientEmpowerment #HealthcareSystemsOptimization #AvoidingSurgeries #ChronicHealthcareSpending #PatientCenteredCare #selffunded #podcast

This latest episode of The Movement Prescription Podcast with Hussain Al-Zubaidi and Craig Blain highlighted the power of language to utilise time-sparse opportunities. This is not a new concept, with my mother-in-law frequently talking about neuro-lingustic programming (NLP) and reiteration of some points in previous episodes made by Hamish Reid and Noemi Molnar. But this is important in highlighting the value and also in leading to change in behaviour. My take homes: 🏋♂️ Use empowering language. Hussain talked about the phrase 'wear and tear' to discuss osteoarthritis, a commonly used phrase which has the potential to remove ownership and it implies there's nothing that can be done to improve symptoms. 👨⚕️ Remember a consultation is a meeting of two experts: a point repeatedly highlighted in the Active Conversations course ❔ Use questions as a tool to reframe thinking. I loved Craig's miracle question: "If you were to achieve YOUR GOAL [e.g. weight loss] tomorrow, what would life look like?" Would be great to hear your thoughts, and thanks to Hussain Al-Zubaidi and Craig Blain for a wonderful episode!
