Results from the first two arms of our patient-centered trial, I-SPY 2.2, aimed at personalizing treatment based on tumor type and response, were published on September 14th and presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology. The results were also published in Nature Medicine Journal. The goal of I-SPY 2.2 is to achieve a complete pathological response for every patient, which means no tumor remains before surgery, while also reducing treatment toxicity. You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gGn6iw34 And learn more about Quantum Leap Healthcare Collaborative at QuantumLeapHealth.org. . . . #HealthcareForAll #InnovateHealthcare #PersonalizedMedicine #PatientCare #HealthEquity #HealthcareInnovation #BridgingResearchAndCare #IntegrityInHealthcare #CollaborativeCare #TransparencyInHealth #FutureOfHealthcare #ScienceAndCare #HealthcareLeadership #HealthForAll #MedicalInnovation #nonprofit #clinicaltrials #datacollection #healthdata #researchdata #diseaseresearch #findacure #nonprofit

Brain Aneurysms: A Brief Overview What is a brain aneurysm? A brain aneurysm, also known as a cerebral aneurysm or intracranial aneurysm, is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. It occurs when a section of the blood vessel wall weakens, causing it to bulge outward. What causes brain aneurysms? The exact cause of most brain aneurysms is unknown, but several factors can contribute to their formation, including: Genetics: A family history of aneurysms can increase your risk. High blood pressure: Chronic high blood pressure can weaken blood vessel walls. Smoking: Smoking damages blood vessels and increases the risk of aneurysm formation. Atherosclerosis: Buildup of plaque in the arteries can weaken the vessel walls. Symptoms of a brain aneurysm Most small aneurysms do not cause any symptoms until they rupture. A ruptured aneurysm can lead to a severe headache, often described as the "worst headache of your life." Other symptoms may include: * Nausea and vomiting * Stiff neck * Light sensitivity * Confusion * Seizures * Stroke-like symptoms Treatment for brain aneurysms Treatment for brain aneurysms depends on the size and location of the aneurysm, as well as whether it has ruptured. Treatment options may include: Observation: Small, unruptured aneurysms may be monitored closely without treatment. Clipping: A surgical procedure to clip off the aneurysm. Coiling: A minimally invasive procedure to fill the aneurysm with tiny metal coils. If you experience a sudden, severe headache or other symptoms of a brain aneurysm, it's important to seek immediate medical attention.

Conversations I have with patients considering #DIEPflap are full of so many questions, especially if they have a new diagnosis. Their stories, their personal preferences, their feelings of being lost and overwhelming resonate with me after going through this process myself. They need resources, education, to empower them to make an informed decision about all their options for surgery when they are facing #mastectomy. In my latest blog, I provide a focused list and links to those resources I often provide to get them started. I cannot do this without the collaborative efforts and generous time given to me by many surgeons. I want to acknowledge a few of those surgeons listed in the blog. I hope you will share this with patients who need this information. 🌸 Exploring Pediatric Ovarian Masses: Understanding the Spectrum 🌸 In pediatric patients, ovarian masses present a diverse range of conditions, encompassing both benign and malignant tumors. These masses, specifically termed ovarian tumors, signify abnormal growths in the ovaries, varying in their nature from benign to malignant. 🟣 Benign Lesions: Common benign masses in children include simple or epithelial cysts, teratomas, and granulosa cell tumors. While typically non-cancerous, they necessitate proper evaluation and may be managed conservatively with surgical approaches to preserve function. 🟣 Malignant Tumors: Though less frequent, malignant ovarian tumors in children pose greater concern due to their potential for spreading to other organs. They encompass germ cell tumors, epithelial cell tumors, stromal cell tumors, or metastatic lesions, requiring aggressive treatment modalities like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. 🔍 Diagnosis: Accurate differentiation between benign and malignant masses is pivotal for determining appropriate management strategies. While ultrasound aids in initial identification, further evaluation through imaging studies and tumor markers is often indispensable. The intricate balance between diagnosis and treatment underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in pediatric ovarian masses. Let's continue the conversation and share our insights on optimizing care for these young patients. #PediatricOvarianMasses #OvarianTumors #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #PediatricOncology

Breaking Barriers: Robert Chelsea's Historic Full Face Transplant In a remarkable medical feat, Robert Chelsea became the first African American to receive a full face transplant in July 2019. The surgery, performed at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, was not only groundbreaking due to Chelsea's racial background but also because he was the oldest recipient at 68 years old. The transplant was necessitated by severe injuries Chelsea sustained in 2013, when his vehicle was hit by a drunk driver, resulting in burns covering 60 percent of his body and face. After enduring more than 30 corrective surgeries and years of physical recovery, Chelsea received his new face during an intensive 16-hour operation involving over 45 professionals, including surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists. This medical milestone transcends its impressive technical achievements; it addresses significant issues related to racial disparities in organ transplantation. Historically, African Americans have faced disproportionately longer wait times for organ transplants and have had lower rates of receiving these life-saving procedures compared to their white counterparts. Robert Chelsea’s successful surgery has cast a spotlight on these critical issues, emphasizing the urgent need for diversity and equitable representation in medical treatment and organ donation. Robert Chelsea's story has been widely covered in the media, inspiring many, particularly within the African American community, to become more engaged with organ donation. This increased awareness is crucial as it may lead to positive changes in organ donation rates and policies, potentially saving more lives and reducing disparities in healthcare. By overcoming incredible odds, Robert Chelsea has not only transformed his life but also set a precedent that may accelerate change in organ transplantation practices, offering hope and a new narrative to many who await similar miracles.
