Ensuring safety in the operating room is paramount to protecting both patients and healthcare professionals. Here are some critical safety tips to observe: Sterile field maintenance: Confirm that all instruments, supplies and personnel are sterile before entering the operating room. Proper hand hygiene: Thoroughly wash hands and use surgical scrubs before and after patient contact and whenever gloves are removed or changed. Verification of patient identity and procedure: Match the patient's identity with the surgical procedure, utilizing checklists to prevent errors. Use of personal protective epquipment: Ensure all personnel wear appropriate epquipment, including gloves, masks, gowns and eye protection. Instrument count: Perform meticulous counts of instruments and sponges before, during and after surgery to ensure nothing is inadvertently left inside the patient. Safe medication practices: Verify medications, dosages and expiration dates before administration. Clearly label all tools to prevent medication errors. Effective communication: Foster an environment where team members feel comfortable speaking up about concerns or discrepancies. Ergonomics and positioning: Be mindful of ergonomics to prevent strain or injury. Correctly position both patient and surgical team members to facilitate optimal access and minimize risk of complications. Emergency preparedness: Ensure readiness for emergencies by having resuscitation equipment and protocols readily available. The risks associated with surgical procedures can be significantly minimized by rigorously following these safety protocols, ensuring a safer environment for both patients and healthcare providers. #operatingroom #operatingroomnurse #ornurse #or #healthcare #healthcarejobs #healthcarestaffing #healthcarecareers #healthcareprofessionals #hiringnurses #nursing #nurse #nurses #nursejobs #nursesjobs #travelnurse #travelingnurse #travelhealthcare #nursesonlinkedin #registerednurse #registerednursejobs

Are we surfing on low tide? Patient safety at stake. an inculcate culture among the private healthcare setting- Double shift nursing duties is becoming regular and in some places it is regular. Nurses report to work before the sun rise and we leave work after the sun sets- we don’t get to see the Sun and the blue sky in a tropical country. High demand, Low supply. Nursing shortage coping mechanism- is this a way to stretch the nursing workforce? These ‘double shift’ phenomena happens once to twice a week. Not staff voluntary. Nurses typically have one day off a week or two day off a week depending on their number of working hours a day in their employment contract. Patients’ and Insurers’ pay expensive medical bills with high expectation of quality care. Are we able to deliver that safety and quality when nurses are tired and burnt out working long hours? This issue has been hopping around before I step into the nursing workforce. Thousands of research papers has been published yet the issue still persist. Are we doing enough to educate patient safety? In the clinical setting, we Frequently perform the following before medication administration and before an invasive procedure: 5 Rights of Medication Safety - Correct patient - Correct medication - Correct route - Correct dose - Correct time 5 Rights of Surgical Safety - Correct patient - Correct procedure/surgery - Correct procedurist/surgeon - Correct site - Correct Allergy/precautions Can we have 5 Rights of Nursing Safety too? - Correct staff to patient ratio/ safe surgical turn around time - Correct job description (nurses are to do only nursing task) - Correct training/ competency (nurses are given early induction and trained to handle equipment safely) - Correct total working hours per day - Correct safety c.o.d.e (safe space to speak up) I wish administrators can perform nursing safety timeout too! #nursingjourney #safetyculture #staffnurse
