Our latest article, titled "Estimation of corn crop damage caused by wildlife in UAV images," was published in the Precision Agriculture journal. It details developing and testing a low-cost, easy-to-apply method for accurately assessing corn crop damage using drone imagery and deep learning algorithms. The research was motivated by the significant economic impact of wildlife-induced crop damage and the need for efficient and reliable assessment methods. Our approach leverages the power of artificial intelligence to automate the damage detection process, offering a significant advantage over traditional, labour-intensive methods. The system utilizes standard RGB images captured by consumer-grade drones, making it accessible and affordable for a wide range of users - no expensive hardware is required. The method is integrated into our Deepness QGIS plugin: https://lnkd.in/dzJRUGxM Once you stitch an orthomosaic (e.g., with Open Drone Map) using the UAV-registered photos, you are good to go. Results are only a few clicks away, all using free, open-source tools. Through extensive testing on a diverse dataset, we demonstrated the effectiveness of our method, achieving high levels of accuracy in damage detection. #IUFRO2024 A common task in forestry is to determine the timber value of a forest property. While the valuation of timber in a forest property has traditionally relied on stand-level field visits, remotely sensed data acquired by an unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) is a potential source of auxiliary data for the valuation of timber. This is because forest properties are typically of a size that permits the efficient operation of UAVs. UAV data combined with a probability sample of field plots enable the design-based estimation of the timber value and its associated uncertainty. We observed considerable efficiency gains when using 3D UAV data, which indicates that the use of 3D UAV data can enable a reduced field workload or improve the precision associated with the estimation of timber value in forest properties.
