If you yourself are dealing with public speaking anxiety, or if you have a person in your life that is feeling the stress of presenting I urge you to take another approach. Instead of forcing them to “face their fears”, you should encourage and support them to take tiny, positive, fun, happy, little, STRESS FREE steps. I recommend for you not to avoid public speaking altogether, because you will make it a bigger fear than it already is. Spend your time on small, step-by-step activities that will actually help you, like: ⭐ Reading short poetry around the dinner table. ⭐ Watching your favourite speakers on Youtube. ⭐ Collecting your favourite words and phrases in a notebook. ⭐ Play around with the audio recorder on your phone. ⭐ Go and see stand up comedy, plays, amateur drama, improv or find it online. ⭐ Mimic your favourite radio DJ or podcast host. ⭐ Celebrate all the fun ways that speaking makes your life better. Honestly, sometimes it is hard to remember what it really feels like to be an inexperienced speaker, full of anxiety, and the pressures of teenage life, where image is everything. For example, look at all the talent shows on TV, “X-factor” “America’s got Talent” “The Voice” “Dragon’s Den” “Lions Cave” “Shark Tank” and countless others. While these shows may reward the people with the best stage presence, they certainly spend a lot of airtime shaming and humiliating people who don’t make the cut. But the real truth is this: No one should ever shame or humiliate you for trying your best. They should be celebrating you. Instead of trying to avoid humiliating situations, why not take steps towards making a more supportive environment for your skills to grow?
