FEBRUARY 2ND Groundhog Day, or February 2nd, is the day when woodchucks tell Canadians what awaits them in the months till the official start of Spring. Will it be a long winter or a short winter — as if waiting until early February wasn’t long enough. How long is that groundhog’s shadow? Legend has it that, on February 2nd, if the groundhog emerges from its burrow, sees its shadow and then returns, winter will last for another six weeks. If it doesn’t see its shadow, winter will be shorter. Wiarton Willie, is another of Canada’s most well-known groundhogs, who, along with his successors (each named Willie), has been making prognostications since 1999. While waiting for the prediction on February' 2nd, here are a few seasonal jokes: How does Punxsutawney Phil greet his parents? With hogs and kisses. Does anyone know a good Groundhog Day joke? I keep hearing the same one over and over again. What is a groundhog’s favorite drink? Hole milk. Why is it annoying to watch TV with a groundhog? They hog the remote. What does Punxsutawney Phil use to clean his laundry? Hogwash. Why are woodchucks such bad drivers? Because they hog the road. How do groundhogs approach wellness? Hole-istically. How do you stop a woodchuck from digging holes? Hog-tie it. What do you call a groundhog in the middle of a tennis court? Annette. Which animal takes up the most square feet? A groundhog. Today is Groundhog Day. On February 2, 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. It’s the same tradition every year, and if you have seen the Groundhog Day movie with Bill Murray, then you know that the day can also repeat itself over and over until you figure out a way to break the cycle of mistakes you consistently make. The same applies to financial mistakes many make year after year. There are ways to stop the cycle and get back on the right financial track to avoid a Groundhog Day scenario of your own. * Start and stick with a monthly budget. There is never a "perfect moment" to start a budget. * Pay your bills on time and avoid throwing money away on late fees. * Don't rely on Credit for purchases. Remember to use the "Need vs Want" Method and if you can't afford the expense, go without it or find a way to add an additional revenue stream. * Save and invest. Eliminating bad money habits will get you out of a Financial Groundhogs Day and on to a more secure future.
