LT Tip #117 – Emotionally Intelligent Leaders make time to be part of their community Dale Marie Golden will be centerstage during the Oakland Ballet’s Nutcracker 👑 performance this weekend. Her energy supporting the arts and other value-adding projects within her Oakland community is contagious. Are you inspired by her work, but "do not have the time"? ⌚ Don’t wait until you have “time”-- because it will never be the right moment. There are many excellent causes that will appreciate the one or two hours you can give. Find one that speaks to you and support them with the time and money that you can afford now. What is meaningful to you 🤔 🔎 Your neighborhood community? (rake leaves) 🔎A local food bank? (help box groceries) 🔎A non-profit association? (buy a ticket to an event, walk a shelter dog) 🔎A political action group? (pass out flyers) Just like a butterfly wing 🦋 – a few tiny actions can have a long term impact. One of the leadership lessons I learned from my volunteer work was how to engage each person where they were. Thank you Sara Trub who taught me to 🙂🙂 speak with a volunteer, learn about them, their talent, their passion, and the amount of time ⌚ they had to give. And, the power of a “thank you” and reminder of how important their contribution is to the organization mission. What is your favorite volunteer activity? #Leadership #Volunteer #emotionalintelligence
Love this Susan Schwartz, MS PMP. In terms of actual time, for me, it has involved fundraising and lots of walking to support breast cancer. I walked in 10 blocks consecutively the last 10 years. Miles have ranged from 20 to 60. There’s nothing like being a part of some thing that can make such a big difference. And being able to witness the difference, walking with women who are survivors to men who are wearing tutus. And it does take time, so I understand why and how it could consume us by not doing anything. You definitely gave us this message at the right time as we consider what we want to change and do in 2024.
I am currently volunteering on the Swarthmore College Alumni Council. The college's current freshman class is different from my class in that 56% are domestic students of color, 25% are the first generation in their family to attend college, and 27% are dual citizens, permanent residents, or non-U.S citizens, representing more than 50 countries - a very different class composition from when I attended where I was part of a clear minority. I have had the opportunity to meet some current students, which has been a delightful experience. A number of the international students I have met have reached out to me after meeting to be a sounding board as they navigate their majors and begin their post-college job searches. It has been wonderful to be able to support college students the way I wish I had been supported when I was at that stage of life.
Great post, Susan! I volunteer with the Bar Association of San Francisco, or BASF (I gotta learn how to tag people in here!). I've been working with BASF for more than 10 years, in a variety of capacities. BASF's most important work is done through its Justice and Diversity Center - JDC provides an amazing amount of pro bono legal services (something like $8 million a year) to San Franciscans in need. I'm proud to be affiliated with BASF/JDC and to give them my time and money.
What a beautiful surprise my friend! Yes I am also on the board of the Oakland Ballet. WE NEED YOUR HELP SUPPORTING THE ARTS. Buy a ticket to this weekend's performance at oaklandballet.org. Let me know which show you are coming to - you will not be disappointed! Oakland Ballet Company 💜
What a wake-up call Susan. I find that I have allowed my work life to become so all-consuming that I have all but stopped volunteering. But there are several charities that I support when and how I can. One of my favorites is www.goodsamaritancenter.org in Jackson MS. Goal for 2024 - Make more time to give back.
thanks for the butterfly metaphor reminder
Hey Susan!! I'm glad to see that you're having fun during the Holidays and keeping busy!!
