Our chapter delves into women's experiences in executive roles, who are often rendered invisible and silenced when their leadership styles diverge from Western norms. This analysis emphasizes the challenges these leaders face, highlighting the intersectionality of race, culture, and gender. The chapter argues that non-Western leadership approaches, rich with change-oriented wisdom, are frequently underappreciated. It advocates for a redefinition of leadership narratives to foster inclusivity and recognition of diverse paradigms, providing actionable strategies not only for current executives but also for empowering future generations. What can you be doing to support and develop female leaders in your own organizations? A recent American Psychology Association article noted that Industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists offer a host of evidence-based strategies for helping close the gender gap, including identifying leadership potential early in a woman’s career, skills and leadership training for women, allyship by men, and mentorship and sponsorship programs, among others. But when I turned to top local leaders for advice, Anna Nalean, Community Impact Coordinator, Delta Dental of Iowa, simply said, "Be intentional." Nalean offered: "Businesses have to be intentional about acknowledging and then growing the many talented female leaders that surround them. So many times I’ve seen organizations lose out on incredibly talented leaders, simply by not seeing her (she is often not the loudest voice in the room!) or seeing the potential she brings. Recognizing that leader, telling her you see her potential, and then being willing to invest in that potential through development opportunities." Empowering women in leadership positions can do wonders Being an entrepreneur, over the years I have observed and experienced the various challenges a woman handles in order to become not just an entrepreneur but a business leader. It has been great to witness that there has been a great wave of women leading successful organizations and justifying their leadership positions. But there is still much more to explore and empowering women in leadership positions has become essential. Here is what we can do: Recognize and support quality while embracing diverse opinions. The most impactful way to demonstrate that women deserve an equal seat at the table is to lead by example. Start by acknowledging and valuing the quality contributions women make. Ensure their voices are heard, especially in board meetings, and create space for negotiation while considering everyone's opinion, regardless of gender. Leverage women's inherent leadership potential. Provide training and support in empathetic leadership to enable women to lead authentically, using their natural strengths rather than conforming to traditional male leadership styles. As noted earlier, women often excel in the soft skills essential for business leadership. Happy Friday! This is such an important message for leaders (especially new leaders), and I had to share! “Be clear on the type of support and resources you will need to be successful in your next leadership/expanded role.” I would add, EVEN when those resources are not yet available to you. It is extremely important that you document, communicate and align to the support model needed to be successful and thrive at that next level. For example, you are no longer the tactical execution and delivery leader, you now own the strategy. You are being asked to deliver new skills and shift. But you are still spending 50% of your time operating as the “doer.” Throughout your career journey you may also encounter moments where your organization asks you to do more with less. As high performers, our first instinct is to do it all. Operate in our super power, when we are really burning both ends of the candlestick to get things done. It is important we have both the tools and courage to approach each situation with the right plan. My friend and forever Coach LaToya Jordan always seems to get it right! I get to work with hundreds of highly intelligent women across a range of #STEM and #Security industries every year. Of all the ways in which I support women in these industries, one of the most profoundly impactful for me is via the Women in STEM IMPACT Program. This is a 6-month intensive leadership program, where I spend 65 hours with established female STEM leaders, bringing a laser focus to all aspects of their leadership. This 6-month intensive program is for established leaders seeking rapid transformation in their leadership, the development of authentic and enduring leadership confidence, and the ability to create ongoing impact as leaders. The program was a finalist in the 2023 Australian Women in Security Awards 'Best Industry Initiative Supporting Diversity, Inclusion and Equity'. To expand access to this transformational program to more established female-identifying leaders in STEM and Security, we have adapted the program timeframe. As a result, I am delighted to share that the registration period for the Women in STEM IMPACT Program has been extended to late-May, with the first virtual workshop commencing 31 May.
