Implement circularity in value chains to reduce emissions : Circular economy approaches in the value chain increase reuse and recycling of raw materials and products. 2. Designing a supplier engagement program : Develop supplier engagement plans for Scope3 upstream decarbonization by supportaing the decarbonization journey of suppliers. 3. Reduce shipping emissions with renewable fuels & efficiency : Alternative fuels, as well as operation and technological efficiency measures, offer pathways for the shipping industry to meet decarbonization challenges. 4. Switch to renewable energy to decarbonize industrial heat : Low or zero-carbon fuels and renewable energy technologies allow heat-intensive industries to reduce emissions from combustion of fuels (e.g., in manufacturing facilities) 5. Collaborate with peers to set and meet supplier targets : Decarbonize supply chains by collaborating with peers to set industry-wide supplier targets and help suppliers achieve these by aggregating demand. The green transition requires new perspectives. Ultimately, this is the tough truth that we must confront to forge a sustainability strategy that is actually actionable and meaningful. We can embrace all the broad goals about reducing carbon emissions we want, but there are undeniable realities we must face: Switching to renewable energy will be costly in the short-term. There is a lack of major regulations and guidelines about carbon reduction. Right now there is a lack of pressure for big businesses to commit to sustainability beyond missions they can put on public display (such as transparent displays of ESG). Therefore, we must accept reality and face the future head-on. If we fail to assess these questions, the green transition will sputter out and miss our planet’s goal of being Net Zero by 2050.
