It is with great sadness that we share the passing of John J. Fruin, Ph.D., a pioneer in civil engineering, pedestrian planning, and crowd safety research, on 16 January 2025, at the age of 96. Dr. Fruin’s seminal work, Pedestrian Planning and Design (1971), remains foundational for the field of evacuation and pedestrian dynamics. His insights into crowd movement have touched every corner of the industry, enabling safer spaces for countless people. Current UKCMA chair, Anne Marie Chebib BA (Hons), PGDip honoured his memory, saying: "There is not a crowd manager out there who hasn’t learned from John J Fruin, whose definition of crowd management is the cornerstone of our mission at the UKCMA. His legacy is one we will continue to uphold and respect as we strive to make crowds safer across the UK and beyond." UKCMA Fellow, Eric Stuart QPM reflected: "The world of crowds is far safer than it would have been without his work. The baton now rests with others to continue that work." Dr. Fruin defined crowd management as "the systematic planning for, and supervision of, the orderly movement and assembly of people." RIP John J.
