We revisited Cement Masons Local Union 404 in Cleveland for their annual #SuperFlat concrete competition, a spirited showdown between second and third-year apprentices. This yearly event serves as a perfect platform to illustrate the precision of our #LaserScanner versus a Type II device for ASTM E-1155 FF/FL standards. Once again, the 3" self-leveling #Trimble X9 #LaserScanner matched the D-meter's numbers. Yet, beyond the technology, it was the exemplary craftsmanship and meticulousness of the second-year apprentices that truly stole the show. During the competition, Benjamin Little from BuildingPoint Ohio Valley employed the #Trimble X9 for a swift two-minute scan, identifying a deviation of about 1/8" in the second-year apprentices' concrete slab. Although minor, an 1/8" deviation would mean hitting a FL of 50 would be near impossible. Swiftly, the students verified this finding with a site level, discovering an overnight shift in their formwork. They were able to fix the wet concrete and get an impressive FF/FL of 83/79. Unfortunately though, the third-year apprentices emerged victorious, but both groups demonstrated exceptional skill in laying super flat floors. Kudos to Barry Dijulius Jr. and his team for their outstanding work. Your dedication to teaching, quality and learning is truly inspirational. I need your help. When I started a painting business 2 years ago, I always had the goal to give generously, to make a positive impact in the community, and to support others who share a similar drive and ambition to achieve great things. This year, I am so thrilled to announce that we are giving away $2000 in the form of one scholarship that is going to a grade 12 student in the Waterloo Region who is pursuing post secondary education in the skilled trades. There is currently a shortage of labor in the skilled trades, and it is only getting worse as the older generation is retiring. For every 2 people that are retiring, there is only 1 young person entering into the trades. For many generations, parents have told their children "if you want to be successful in life, you need to go to university..." While university might be a great option for some students, it is definitely not for everyone. Four-year university degrees have been getting increasingly expensive. More and more students are graduating with excessive student loan debts, and no plan for their career that involves their degree. Alternatively, there are amazing opportunities in the skilled trades. Many of these career paths involve a 2 year college degree. The tuition each term is 1/4 of what it is at universities, and 1/8th the price overall. In addition to this, apprenticeships are available, where students will work in their field, and get paid $20-$40+ per hour, as part of their education!! Immediately after graduating, many of these students are able to land an amazing career, and it is not uncommon to be earning $80k+ Don't get me wrong - regardless of whether a student goes through university, college, or neither, they can have an amazing career. What I believe makes a person successful in their career is their work ethic, their commitment to personal development, and their network. My goal with this scholarship is to help close the skilled labour shortage by promoting the trades as the amazing career that they can be. Then to support one student who is perusing post secondary education in the skilled trades, to help with the financial burdens of tuition, food, rent, gas, and the general increasing costs of living. I hope to find a student who is eager to learn, and eager to work. A student who is ambitious, who has big dreams, and who is choosing to accomplish them through the skilled trades. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 As times change, so do the methods for fixing into hollow pot concrete slabs. Let's clear up any confusion. In the past, the advice was to fix between the hollow parts or ‘holes’ of the slabs. However, this guidance is now outdated. Modern hollow concrete slabs are reinforced with steel bars to enhance their tensile strength. If you attempt to drive an anchor through the ‘holes’, you'll likely encounter these reinforcement bars (rebar), risking damage to your concrete screw 🔩 and rendering it incapable of supporting the manufacturer’s safe working load. ❌ So, what's the correct approach? ➡ According to current ETA guidance and manufacturer’s instructions, the recommended method is to drill a hole through the ‘holes’ in the slab and drive the anchor inside them. It may seem counter-intuitive, but this ensures that the anchor can bear the safe working load it was designed for. Reflecting on your apprenticeship, what installation advice have you encountered that has since evolved?

So many leadership gems to pay attention to from this principal. 1. He identified and centered his stakeholders. 2. He was intentional to engage those most negatively impacted by school safety issues. 3. He listened. 4. He activated the ideas and requests of his stakeholders. 5. He accepted help/assistance from student/ stakeholders. 6. He recognized the contributions of his stakeholders.
