🌍 How ‘Generation Restoration’ Can Safeguard Africa’s Land and Livelihoods 🌍 Global cooperation and action are required to tackle land degradation and desertification, ensuring a sustainable future for all. 📅 From Africa Renewal: May 2024 📅 5 June 2024 🖋️ By Elizabeth Maruma Mrema In the face of a triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss, and pollution, the world will come together on 5 June to mark World Environment Day. Hundreds of millions of people will engage in this milestone moment for environmental action. Since 1973, World Environment Day led by the UN Environment Programme has driven action on some of the planet’s most pressing environmental problems. This year, the focus is on land degradation, desertification, and drought. With one-fifth of Earth’s land now degraded, the well-being of more than 3 billion people is at risk. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, launched in 2021, aims to prevent and reverse damage to the natural world. Countries have pledged to revive 1 billion hectares of land, but we need to restore at least 1.5 billion hectares by 2030. In Africa, where 65% of productive land is degraded, restoration efforts could create millions of green jobs. Projects like the Great Green Wall and the African Farmers Restoring Food Systems are leading the way. We are the generation that can make peace with the land. As we gear up to UNEA-6 being held at The UNEP HQs at Gigiri, Nairobi on 26th February to 1st March 2024. There is one resolve; that the tripple planetary crisis ie biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution is more evident in this 21st century. From the extended flooding and drought phenomena to the heat waves and constant rising of the sea level, they evidently show how nature us unforgiving Human life is besiged by severe calamities of  poverty ,hunger, diseases crisis as well as loss of property due to frequent flash floods.  It's time to work for the environment, and it will work for us. If we destroy nature, nature will definitely destroy us. UNEA(United Nations Environmental Assembly) being the highest decision making body of UNEP, composed of all the 193 countries that are UN member states , will be converging in Nairobi for the UNEA-6. Pollution is pervasive and directly threatens human health and the environment. Various forms of pollution are found in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live. UNEP-WCMC works with governments, businesses, and civil society to Beat Pollution. To this end, the Implementation Plan Towards a Pollution-Free Planet, which was welcomed at the fourth United Nations Environment Assembly, identified five key action areas for addressing the gaps and challenges associated with pollution: 1. Knowledge, 2. Implementation, 3. Infrastructure, 4. Awareness, 5. Leadership. I urge everyone to take active steps in adhering to these measures. The situation has been made that people do not want to celebrate any day of their beloved country, nor do they want to identify themselves with this country, nor do they want to hold its flag. Although this country is an excellent land in terms of geography, it is considered ideal in terms of climate, it is not equal in agricultural production. It has colorful scenes in every season, but the ignorance of the people has made its climate worse. Damaged is caused by our ignorance, at personal level, that we are using non-renewable resources indiscriminately and shamelessly and we do not understand the significance of using renewable resources, neither do we want to go towards it, nor do we want to think about it, nor do we want to listen to anyone. Nor do we want to see the development of other countries and learn from them. As long as this country was dear to us, as long as it was feeding us, when we all started to call the country worthless without thinking, what did we give it? Being an advocate of environmental sustainability I must say I will always hold the flag of this country, no matter what. And I will continue to defend for its environment in whatever capacity I can do.
