Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) For the next instalment of our deep dive series, we're taking a closer look at the Harbour Porpoise, which is sighted throughout the year in Sussex. Harbour Porpoises can grow between 1.4 to 1.9m in length. They have a stocky body, a small rounded head that lacks a beak and a triangular dorsal fin that has a blunt tip. The body is a dark grey which lightens on the flanks and underside to light grey or white. They are most often seen in groups of 2-5 individuals, however, they are also sighted alone. Harbour porpoises are known to be elusive and will rarely approach boats. They generally travel quite slowly and tend to be sighted in relatively inshore waters and coastal regions. Every year, hundreds of thousands of cetaceans, like the young humpback whale pictured below, become trapped in lost or discarded fishing equipment, also known as 'ghost gear'. Tragically claiming the lives of countless marine animals, thankfully this juvenile humpback whale was freed by a rescue team in Algoa Bay, South Africa last year - but not all are so lucky. Determined to draw attention to ghost gear and its potential harm on marine animals, our sister charity the World Cetacean Alliance has joined forces with sustainable brand Waterhaul. Committed to combating the threat of ghost gear by removing this dangerous waste from the ocean and transforming it into recycled products, the collaboration has launched a limited-edition range of rescue-to-recycle sunglasses, using this harmful marine plastic. Order your own piece of ocean conservation whilst raising funds for further rescue efforts, here: https://lnkd.in/d-q5QXyU #sussexdolphinproject #ghostgear #cetaceans #worldcetaceanalliance #resucetorecycle

Please help our friends at Sussex Wildlife Trust to stop the dumping of dredged sediment in Beachy Head West Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) in Sussex. Details below. 👇
Consultation ends tomorrow! Brighton Marina is currently allowed to dump dredged sediment in Beachy Head West Marine Conservation Zone but their licence is now up for renewal – and we don’t think this activity should continue. https://lnkd.in/eck4bicD #StopDumpingOnOurReef
