Co-founder & CEO at Critical. | Startmate Accelerator S22 Alumni | TEDx Speaker | I help designers create beautiful spaces using 100% recycled plastic panels called Cleanstone.
The future of furniture is brave, rooted in #circularity and embraces innovative materials. And this matters because we owe it to our grandchildren to do the right thing. Here are 3 trends happening right now: 1/ Furniture crafted from recycled plastic panels like Critical. Cleanstone offer superior durability, aesthetics, and a significantly lower environmental footprint compared to virgin materials. Like these beautiful stools designed by Nathan Swaney from Gestalt Studios and fabricated by Alistair Munro exclusively for Auckland Design Week Ltd (Ngā mihi nui Jen Jones). Made using 100% Kererū Cleanstone, means this beautiful and sturdy stool does not only use 100% recycled plastics, but also fully circular and recyclable at the end of it's extremely long life. This product will last generations. 2/ Natural materials like bamboo and mycelium are increasingly popular choices due to their rapid renewability and low carbon footprint. 3/ Consumers are demanding greater transparency regarding the origin and life cycle of furniture materials, playing a key part to how they select products for their spaces. So I'm a designer or a manufacturer of furniture products, how does this affect me? Well, sustainability is a growing priority for businesses. Offering eco-conscious furniture solutions can support your journey to becoming a market leader while helping to future-proof your brand as stricter regulations and environmental concerns are driving the market towards sustainable practices. And we cannot move to circularity alone. Collaboration is key. Choose to partner with sustainable suppliers/companies that prioritise responsible sourcing, ethical manufacturing, and offer transparency throughout the supply chain. Remember we don't inherit the land from our ancestors but borrow it from our children. We owe it to our grandchildren and their grandchildren to contribute to a greener future while creating beautiful and functional spaces. I run a green building material company called Critical. (criticaldesign.nz) and we help designers and brands build beautiful and sustainable spaces using Cleanstone, our range of near carbon neutral, 100% recycled plastic panels for building fit outs and furniture. If your working on a new project or developing new products, send me a DM! #SustainableFurniture #FutureofDesign #Architects #Designers #FitOut #Retail #Hospitality #CircularEconomy #RecycledMaterials #Biomaterials #Transparency #CriticalDesign

In our journey towards sustainability, it's time to rethink the way we furnish our spaces. Traditional wooden furniture, while timeless in its appeal, often comes with a heavy environmental cost. The depletion of forests, the carbon footprint of logging and processing, and the limited lifespan of wooden furniture all contribute to its unsustainable nature. That's why we're championing a shift towards furniture made from recycled plastic lumber and boards. These innovative materials offer a plethora of benefits that not only match but surpass those of traditional wood. Here's why it's time to ditch the old and embrace the new: Environmental Conservation: By opting for furniture made from recycled plastic, we're diverting plastic waste from landfills and giving it a new life. This not only reduces the pressure on our precious natural resources but also helps in mitigating the ever-growing problem of plastic pollution. Durability and Longevity: Contrary to popular belief, furniture made from recycled plastic lumber and boards is incredibly durable and long-lasting. It's resistant to moisture, rot, insects, and UV rays. Versatility in Design: Recycled plastic lumber and boards offer unparalleled versatility in design. They can be molded and shaped into a wide range of styles, colors, and textures, allowing for endless possibilities in furniture design. Low Maintenance: Say goodbye to the tedious upkeep that comes with wooden furniture. Recycled plastic requires minimal maintenance, with no need for staining, painting, or sealing. Sustainable Choice: By choosing furniture made from recycled plastic, you're making a tangible contribution to sustainability. You're supporting a circular economy where resources are reused and recycled, rather than depleted and discarded. So let's join hands in embracing this eco-friendly alternative to traditional wooden furniture. Together, we can make a difference—one recycled plastic chair, table, or bench at a time. Here's to a future where #sustainability meets style! Are recycled materials the future of furniture design? This year at Salone Satellite I have introduced two products - a wall mirror and a side table - from locally sourced recycled materials - recycled plastic panels from a company called Plastic Guys and sustainable concrete from recycled demolition rubble from Cementum, s.r.o . Products were well liked and admired and both materials were wildly asked about and discussed. Originally, the wall mirror was made from solid oak and the side table was meant to be from luxurious stones. I was a bit worried that these "second-hand" materials will not be accepted by the audience at such an event as Salone del Mobile, but I was wrong. So to conclude my question at the beginning - I hope so! #recycledplastic #sustainability #recycledconcrete #recycledmaterials #czechmade #salonesatellite #sustainabledesign #recycle #upcycle #circulareconomy #upcycling #czechdesign
